Weaponizing cap space

Created by: Kyle_Davidson
Team: 2023-24 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 20, 2024
Published: Feb. 20, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The 26 2nds are valuable for trade pieces when the hawks are transitioning to contention. I wouldn’t mind stacking picks later than 2026 while we are bad, but that is difficult to reflect in the current rules.
Trades
1.
CHI
  1. Johansen, Ryan
  2. 2024 4th round pick (COL)
  3. 2026 2nd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Pure cap dump trade, not thinking to hard about corresponding moves for the AV’s for this to make sense.
COL
Using the Zaitsev trade as a direct comparable, the difference is the pick years being reversed (at least the closer one being a 4th vs 2nd being further away)
    2.
    CHI
    1. Ceci, Cody
    2. 2024 2nd round pick (EDM)
    EDM
      Similar premise to AV’s trade.
      Buyouts
      Retained Salary Transactions

Both trades would work for next year.

The zaitsev trade happened in season, but if they don’t have corresponding moves to justify them then next season works.

Edmonton is headed to the playoffs. 1. They won't be trading away a top-4 RHD, 2. Ceci is not a cap dump.

To address your concerns, Ceci by the analytics is not a good top 4 RD. 32 thoughts podcast has implied EDM is likely to make a big swing, and similar to the Ekholm trade that may include Ceci leaving as a cap dump.

That kind of trade would have Ceci included. Not traded separately. Just like the Barrie-for-Ekholm deal.

In any case, Ceci is not a dump. They'll only move him if a clear upgrade is coming back.

Can't see the Av's or the Oilers paying that much. Hawks should definitely make both deals if offered though.
