We've got no reason to let Vatrano go for less than a first, and not a supremely.over the hill one either, tack on some more price for retention and taking Smith.
Is it an overpay? Sure, but he's not a rental and Verbeek is interested in keeping him around at least until the kids start scoring, and we're more than happy to keep him around helping us score a few wins and get a realistic offer next TDL than sell him now.
Frank Vatrano had a career-best year last season and has already surpassed that this year; he would be second on your team in goal scoring (behind only Sid) and third among forwards on your team in point scoring (behind only Sid and Jake Guentzel) on a team which certain subtle indicators suggest isn't as good a team as yours, and he's signed for another season at a cost well below Crosby, Guentzel, Rust, Smith, Malkin and Rakell. Yeah, he's worth a first and Brayden Yager, both of which have pure speculative value at this point.
But as @LuckyMoneyPuck astutely points out, if the Pens pick is a top-10, then they get to keep it and lose the 2025 pick. So they would keep that first and thus they're probably out of the Vatrano market.
This is the nth most delusional Pens GM post I've seen this year. We have no reason to be buying at the deadline and Vatrano's asking price will be much higher than that.
