Flames increase their cap hit, get a player with the value of maybe a 6th at best who is indefinitely on IR and get a pick that if a 1st is on the table they could get it from plenty of teams. None of that really adds up. They're better off just grabbing a 1st from somewhere if they can or a better player.

They get a first for Tanev and a servicable roster player in Timmins. They now have 3 retention slots to move Hanafin, Brodie, and Markstrom. They get their first for Tanev, keep a retention slot, and get value for brodie at 2.5 million

When did Timmins become serviceable? He's a 7th or 8th D man that can't stay in the line up on a team blatantly seeking to improve their D core. He's injury riddled and just takes up a roster spot. He had a flash in the pan last season and has returned to exactly the defence man that was traded for Curtis Douglas. Leafs fans are constantly dumping Brodie on here, there isn't a ton of value and Calgary notoriously doesn't retain salary.

Significant overpay for unretained Tanev - the 2024 1st alone is an overpay for him unretained. The reported ask is a 2nd and a mid level prospect.

Brodie has looked much better since moving to his natural side, subtracting him for Tanev is not the upgrade you might think it is. Leafs would then need to replace Brodie. Timmins has very little value, but he is still probably equivalent to a 6th or a future 5th.
