No retention, a prospect that's pushing NHL ready with significant upside and taking on money for a pick. Seems in the ballpark for a 4.5M rental

whats the point of LA making this trade, how does this make them better at the deadline. Greer has less points than Kaliyev.

Greer is a UFA, so that deal is a No.

Fits the bottom 6 role better, get a pick for a guy struggling that's potentially in the top 60 of the draft, Greer's been more defensively responsible, while leading Kaliyev in hits, blocks, takeaways dzone starts. Kaliyev feels like a square peg in a round hole, Greer slots really nicely in this bottom half of the forwards group

The Kings already have: Byfield-PLD-Lafreniere as the 3rd line, which means you think Greer would be an improvement over Grundstrom-Turcotte/Lizotte-Lewis/JAD. Greer has the 4th lowest plus minus and that is with averaging less than 9 minutes ATOI. I'd rather keep a scoring forward with Arvidsson getting injured in the previous game.

Not really.
Niemela is a really good D prospect.
Leafs wouldn't even do this.

He's a really good prospect in the Leafs system which isn't saying a whole bunch. Don't get yourself carried away with that.

Sure, but teams don't usually give up their top D prospect for a middle of the pack rental D.
Tanev's value is like a 2nd round pick and a sweetener

You could argue really really easily that Neimela's value isn't far off from a 2nd. Hence the Flames taking money back. I don't know anyone out there moving more than that for Neimela. Tough to say middle of the pack rental when he's on the top 3 - 5 of most analysts trade boards.

Fair. But essentially if Niemela = 2nd rounder then the trade here is a 2nd and a 3rd for Tanev. I didn't even notice Reaves was in the deal tbh. Makes more sense for CGY to just retain.

You're right though that I'm sure the Leafs and Leafs fans value their own prospects more than others. I think thats pretty normal for any fanbase.

Ultimately I don't think Leafs would do Niemela and a 3rd. I also think that would be a pretty good return for Tanev personally.
Thats why I intially replied as you said it was a bad return

They're literally taking back Reaves in the deal. Leafs need to add a pick just for that lol
