There is reason to the madness

Created by: hockeynutter
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 21, 2024
Published: Feb. 21, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ever since the Reilly injury, Brodie was moved to the left side with Liljegren for a patch "top pair". The results were mostly favourable. Brodie was looking better on his left side. liljegren showed he can be trusted. The pair was not the best against the Flyers and proves they should not be a #1 pair. This gives Liljegren a chance to grow and prove himself they way he should. Brodie goes on his better side with better assignments to help him and his declining play. Tanev works as a better pair at least for the remainder of the year with Reilly. Tanev can resign at a reasonable deal. Next year leafs can see who works better with Reilly Liljegren or Tanev. This gives the leafs a chance to look at a good left pairing DMan to balance out the pairings.

Tampa if desperate will pay premium for help, they are in now. If they feel they is little else IE Hanifin and company go elsewhere and Timmins shows good recovery in next couple weeks, it can be possible.
As for Tanev, they want a second, but since leafs don't have it and don't want to give a first, and so far no other team is offering what Calgary is wanting, they may go for a conditional way to get a third to recoup some assets. Prospects can vary based on whom Calgary is interested in more.

Timmins is worth like a 5th. That's a huge rival tax right there.
Nothing in the Tanev package worth it for the Flames.

I want to live in your world where a 7th defensemen with mono is more valuable than Chris Tanev

a desperation move for timmins would be a 4th, not a 2nd

and someone will give cgy a 2nd for tanev. they take that before a 3rd and pocket change

The only way it happens is with a lot of ifs. Yes I admit I am gauging based on Jeannot last year. But there is also a very high chance that Tampa finds another DMan somewhere where they don't have to expend a 2nd for Timmins. Plus Timmins has to show health improvements. Another big if.

Every other defenseman available would have to be traded first for timmins to be worth a 2nd

a team may give a 5th for Timmins. I don't see any scenario where Timmins is worth a 2nd by this deadline.

They would just have to be off the board. No way anyone on here last year would have predicted Jeannot to be traded for 5 picks including a 1st. Once the pickings comes out, there always seems to be one team that makes a desperate bid. JG Pageau trade with the Islanders is another example.

They really need a minimum age limit for participation on this site!

I can understand why Jeannot was that guy. Although that trade was unanimously a WTF trade. Timmins will not be that guy though. I don't see any team salivating over Timmins. He isn't worthless but definitely not a 2nd.

No argument. As written for this trade to be a unanimous wtf needs a lot of ifs. Meaning the odds are slim. Most likely Tampa finds another DMan somewhere else for a 1st or 2nd. I agree Timmins has shown potential but very inconsistent where I hesitate to trade him as he is has value as a 7th for us especially for what we would probably get for him.
