HabsOlutely

Created by: HabsOlutely
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 22, 2024
Published: Feb. 22, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Habs trade away Allen, Pezzetta, Savard, Beck and (maybe) Pearson + 1st ('24) + 2nd ('25) + 3rd ('24)
Habs acquire Zegras, E. Gauthier and a 5th (2024 or 2025)
Trades
1.
COL
  1. Allen, Jake
  2. Pezzetta, Michael
  3. 2024 3rd round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
1. Colorado addresses its needs in nets with a reliable 1B goalie.
2. Canadiens take back a contract of equal value for an underperforming forward.
3. Colorado acquired Pezzetta to add some grit to their bottom-6.
4. Canadiens send a 3rd round pick to a 3rd party team to retain some of Jake Allen's cap to make him more appealing to Colorado over the next two years.
2.
ANA
  1. Beck, Owen
  2. Johansen, Ryan
  3. 2024 1st round pick (MTL)
  4. 2025 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Gorton/Hughes have made a name for themselves by not overpaying for talent. Although Zegras would fit in well with Montreal's emerging forward core, he remains a nice-to-have for them. They will not overpay by a wide margin to acquire him.

1. Anaheim acquired Ryan Johansen to replace Adam Henrique that Anaheim trades at the deadline. Anaheim can then flip Johansen half retained at next year's deadline for a third (most likely) or second round pick If he has a great season).
2. Canadiens include a B+ forward prospect such as Owen Beck, Riley Kidney or Jan Mysak.
To those suggesting that Barron be included in a trade to Anaheim, the Canadiens likely won't trade a young RHD such as Barron/Mailloux until they have more clarity on Reinbacher's development.
3. Montreal's 1st round pick in 2024 will likely land between the 5th or 10th selection in the upcoming draft.
4. As Pittsburgh will likely miss the playoffs in 2025, their 2nd round pick will likely be a top-50 selection in the 2025 draft.
3.
TBL
  1. Savard, David ($1,750,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Montreal capitalize on Savard's high trade value and Tampa's familiarity with Savard, having won two cups with TB.
1. Canadiens acquire a promising young forward selected in the first round.
2. Savard replaces an injured Sergachev this year, and can participate in a 2025 playoff push with his half-retained contract in 2025.
4.
MTL
  1. 2025 5th round pick (LAK)
LAK
  1. Pearson, Tanner
Additional Details:
The Canadiens might be able to capitalize on a playoff contender's desperation during the final hour of the trade deadline, netting them a 5th round pick in the 2024/25 draft.
The Canadiens do not trade him for less than a 5th and chose to keep him to fill up the roster until the end of the season.
I am NOT singling out LA Kings with this trade.

Avs dont really have a need for Pezzetta but getting Allen retained and getting rid of Johansen without giving up any assets is a huge win

Too much speculation here relying on what other teams not involved in the initial trades are up to. COL passes. If nothing else, Ryjo can sit on the fourth line given that the Avs need centers not more wingers. Allen even retained isn't worth much as there are others with similar numbers at lower cap hits.

Welcome to CapFriendly! Sometimes, it's not too friendly.

I'm quite impressed with your initial effort here. To begin with, I would accept that offer as the Anaheim GM. I usually agree with @MoSeider53, but this offer includes a formulation we Anaheim stalwarts have accepted in the past and I don't think that the additions of Johansen and the second degrade it. Moreover, I understand why you show Z as your (temporary) #2C -- because Kirby Dach is on the IL list; I think that your idea is that once he comes off it, Z moves over and Newhook moves down.

You're also spot on with respect to Pearson, down to Los Angeles NOT being the team that would give you that fifth.

Well done. Very well done for a neophyte.
