Deadline thoughts

Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 23, 2024
Published: Feb. 23, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Burroughs, Kyle
Additional Details:
The Leafs could benefit from adding another stay-at-home gritty D, and Burroughs fits that bill. He knows his role, keeps the game simple. Big thing here is that contract...... it's good.

Sharks fans may want to keep him, but with the UFA market rather strong on the back end, maybe a deal Greir considers.
SJS
  1. Robertson, Nicholas
Additional Details:
I question if Roberston has a long term future in Toronto with the emergence of McMann, and the play of Holmberg; and that is not to mention Cowan and Minten. Even there, I am sure there will be those that say WTF?

Sharks need scoring, and that is in short supply in the UFA market. Robertson is young and has the upside.....
2.
TOR
  1. Trenin, Yakov
Additional Details:
As much as I like Holmberg's play, I prefer Trenin's experience.
NSH
  1. 2024 3rd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
One can question if Trotz does this with The Preds in the mix, but if this is a rebuild, I have to think he considers it.
3.
TOR
  1. 2026 2nd round pick (COL)
COL
  1. Jones, Martin
  2. 2026 4th round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Avs have to be looking for a backup. This is completely dependent on Woll's return.

I would think Jones can land a 3rd given his play this year, but since the Avs lack this for the foreseeable future, and even flipping picks does truly work for a couple years, 2026 it is.

Martin Jones isn’t worth a 5th thinking he is worth a 2nd is hilarious.

not getting a 2nd for jones, no sense in buying trenin the rental when holmberg and mcmann are just as good. could probably get more elsewhere for robertson

I flipped picks there bud. I know Jones isn't worth a 2nd, but I will argue his season has him in 3rd round range.

Again, I flipped picks.🤦‍♂️

Holmberg remains waiver exempt, why I would look at the Trenin deal. Keefe has a way of not playing his bench, so having more experience on it may have him actually trying to do it. Trenin amd Gregor are significantly nastier than Holmberg and Gregor.

Lastly, you maybe get more for Robertson, but, for what Burroughs can do (he is playing significant minutes for the Sharks) with 2 years behind this one at $1.1 million, Robertson is very likely the price tag. Not sure how much better one does in a Roberston deal

Ok on the Sharks deal. Robertson playing well so it stings a bit, but a longer term right d with cheap contract makes the sting go away.

LOL! Such an easy no for the Avs and Jones isn't close to that value.

Since everyone is missing the 4th rounder attached to Jones, I am gonna ask of you noticed that.

Moving back 60 picks. Big cost🙄

Not sure how your fanbase sees a shakier Allen being worth a 3rd outright, but I can roll with the opinion.

Ideally he should be in around 3rd. The numbers would support that...... even last years in Seattle when you compare them to this year's Allen.

Tried to be inventive..... sometime you win, sometimes you don't

Not all Avs fans see Allen as a good idea. I personally see it as a totally bad one if only because the Avs won't be able to afford him even with 50% retention going into the second year. It eats into any cap they have for a 2C (assuming they move RyJo somehow). Jones WOULD be a better option imo, but I simply don't see him having that value.

RyJo was a bad idea from the beginning.....

So what value do you out on Jones as a rental? Curious now.

I would think he'd fetch a 4th absolute tops. Mainly because there are so many other younger goalies potentially available and that he hasn't been that good in some time, albeit I'll give him that he was with the Sharks for some of that. He's the kind who is a veteran insurance piece to most teams nowadays, nothing more, a bit like the Avs adding Kinkaid last year but with more experience, and tbh the Leafs are probably better off keeping him specifically for that purpose which is probably why they signed him in the first place.

And agreed, RyJo was a gamble that didn't pay off and I wasn't overjoyed when I saw the Avs had made that move. I didn't expect it to be quite as bad as it has been though, but the last couple of games he's looked more engaged so maybe there is hope yet.
