Could Vancouver go for Savard

Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 27, 2024
Published: Feb. 27, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
So Vancouver may look for a strong defenseman, if they are in talks for Tanev and miss out on the deal, could they make a move to grab Savard?

In this trade I do go on the offense in terms of being aggressive for the Vancouver Canucks to ensure they don't lose another top 4 Defense if they can't get Tanev. It may look unreasonable, but if we take into account that Savard isn't for trade, but Hugues will listen in on any of the incoming interest, he's going to ask for lots especially since Savard took a small discount to sign in Mtl and they'll most likely trade him only to a team with a real chance for the cup. With that extra year to his contract, I can see them paying a bit more in order to try and solidify their stake for another run next year, win or lose this year.

Would love to see a Toronto/Vancouver final ... Bring the cup back and give Bettman the worst nightmares of his life.
Trades
MTL
  1. Räty, Aatu
  2. 2025 1st round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
I know that adding Räty seems like an overpayment, but given the market if Tanev goes somewhere, I would think Vancouver would most likely want to win this trade and not go for a Plan D-E-F- or G..

So a late 1st and Räty for Savard could be the comp needed for Hugues to push on the accept button.
VAN
  1. Savard, David
  2. 2024 3rd round pick (MTL)
Additional Details:
*3rd round pick is to compensate a bit of the disbalance of the 1st + Räty trade.

sure, but when a team adds a bit to even out, its the spare 3rds, not their own. habs have two spare 3rds that they own from other teams. oone of those makes more sense

I agree with your reasoning. Savard is valuable to the Habs, so he would come at a high price.

But you forgot the 50% retained salary. A lot of value comes from that

We're paying the same for him as we did for Hronek? Easy no

Agreed, I just added MTL's since it would most likely reach a better spot for the receiving team. Gives a bit more for Räty.

Guessing you haven't read anything above explaining why it COULD cost more for him at TDL given that he may become the more valuable player if Tanev gets moved.

COULD.. The Hornek deal is in an entirely different time and place. VAN is now in a very likely position to got for it all. They MAY want to make a move and OVERPAY ... Like I said above.. Just to be clear. And Savard's numbers are getting hammered because we have a team that's hurt, and most of them should play AHL or have been moved out but given their bad contracts are here and not helping.. So on a team like Vancouver, his stats will go way up..

Considering Savard isn’t better than any of our top 6 defensemen and is overpaid for next season, no thanks. Especially if the ask is Raty + a 1st, that’s absurd

If VAN wants to pay a ton of assets for a top D we'll go acquire Chychrun. 0 reason for them to pay a lot for Savard to maybe be on our third pair

In theory Vancouver could go for Savard. However, I don't think they would, especially if that's the ask. They were reportedly interested in Tanev and wanted him in the Lindholm deal, but backed out when Conroy wanted a 1st for him. My guess is that Allvin is waiting things out in the hopes that the market for Tanev doesn't materialize and he can pick him up for cheaper at the TDL (probably a 2nd and maybe a low-tier prospect). A big reason for them targeting Tanev was because Hughes went to management and specifically said that Tanev is a guy they should target to bring in. If they weren't willing to give up a 1st for a specific player they were targeting in Tanev, then there's no shot they'd give up a 1st+ for a worse player who they have no relation to.
