The Rangers can’t acquire Tarasenko in a deal with salary retention.

I didn't even look, but I'll guess Vlad to NYR for a first and a lesser pick 50 % retained?

Is this true? I thought the rule was if a team trades a player, they can’t trade back for him with retention. I wasn’t aware it was true if a player left as a FA.

The Rangers had Tarasenko on their reserve list with retention within the last year, Seravelli recently confirmed the rule. The Rangers can only acquire his full contract.

What if Tarasenko was traded to another team with retention, i.e. for example Senko (50% retained) -> Ducks, and then the Ducks sent him to the Rangers without any additional retention?

I have no idea, but that sounds like the kind of loophole that would easily get shut down by the league. A deal like that would not honor the language of the CBA, since the Rangers would technically still be acquiring a player with salary retained (just by another team).

Loopholes were meant to be exposed. Just like the LTIR/playoffs loophole. Still keeps happening, TBL exposed it straight to back to back Cups. Vegas, although wasnt guilty of it last year, but sure as hell could do it this year.

The LTIR loophole works because there’s no cap in the postseason and no language in the CBA preventing a team from activating an LTIR player then either. There is clear and specific language here that any lawyer could easily use against the Rangers if they tried to acquire Tarasenko for anything other than his full hit.
