Maybe, but he’s been unusable this season. I think people underestimate how bad it’s been. But maybe a change of scenery is all he needs.

It's his 7.8m cap next year that should scare off any team. Can't see Vegas wanting 5m Smith next season.

What're you going to flip him for? I think this was the thought process behind Kapanen or maybe he would work out. But it was far less of a committment to the cap. Claiming him would kill any offseason additions Pittsburgh would want to make. Is that worth it on the 15% chance you will be able to get a 2nd out of him with retention?

Agreed, I don't think pens are allowed to retain. I assume they can move him for a 3rd in the off-season again like they did last summer
