Why would the Red Wings trade Kane for futures when they are comfortably in a playoff spot for the first time in years?

Arent the Wings trying to make playoffs? I doubt they move Kane while they're still in WC1.
Also Kane isn't really a Holland-esk player.

Hypothetically if Detroit was willing to move Kane and Kane waived his NTC why wouldn't he chose to go to one of his other preffered teams like NYR or Panthers and go to Edmonton that wasn't on his list at all?
