I'd go after either him or Stolarz, because presumably florida has to make a decision at some point (has been sneaky good, UFA, and from New Jersey)

If I'm PIT I make that trade.

My thought process is late 1st+Bahl for Pettersson, late 1st+Schmid for Jarry.

2nd pays for the retention, and the 2 late 1sts=the much higher 1st

yeah it's a fair package. I'd make the move if I were PIT.
PIT has a replacement for Jarry already and Petterson probably out next year anyway, so they should pull the trigger on that deal.

I think average salary 2nd pairing is 4.5-5 mil this season.
Next year maybe 5 to 5.5 would be my guess on Petterson.
He's not a true 1st pairing guy, but he's a really good 2nd pairing. It's hard to gage though because no matter what he's paired with people who are constantly putting him in bad positions on the defensive end in Letang and EK. It's pretty hard to show your true level when your D partners leave you exposed constantly.

If I could get him on a 5 mill x 6 year extension I’d be very very happy. Get him playing with Marino again as a SHUTDOWN pair and a pair on the PK.

I’m as big a Pettersson fan as anyone. If NJD had the space I’d give him up to 7 a year. But I feel like his style of dman gets underpaid.

Just sign any random bozo from FA. Thats a steal for Evans. Theyll have Suzuki, Dach, Newhook, Dvorak already. Gignac, White, Stephens, Condotta, Maillet all in the AHL that could be brought up. No sense to not take that value and run

5 Mill is way too much for mercer the way hes currently playing

His cap hit was so high because you didn't give him any long term stability though.
Defensemen who got long term deals were in the 4.5-5 range range this year. I'm talking 2nd pairing level guys.
Yes the cap will go up but not by that much on top of the fact the league is becoming more and more top heavy.
2nd pairing guys really aren't the top heavy spending. So the range 5-5.5 is my guess on where 2nd pairing ends up next year.
Just like 4.5 - 5 is probably the cost of a good middle 6 winger. Think 2nd line guy.
The league is getting more top heavy. Over 50% of cap to 4-5 guys on a lot of teams, and everyone else is out of lucky. It's just the way the league is now. You see this on a lot of teams.
Everyone else takes a hair cut. So I'm not worried about some huge cap increase.
If you wanted a lower cap hit on Gav you should have given him term.

MTL already have a lot of picks in the next 2 drafts, we lack centers, we won’t trade one for another pick who have 20% chance to play in the NHL …

Just keep Evans then and everyone in the locker room will be happy. You have your own mentality on how you would do things, but it won’t happen
