is trading for futures and delaying the timeline a better option

Description
to me there are some big decisions to make this offseason.

Do you commit to the core you have signed for the next 4 years and try to retool around them, or do you trade away a couple of them for potentially more value that could help your younger core a bit further down the line?

A middle ground obviously exists, but how feasible is that?

Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to go slightly older instead, to surround the core with more vets / experienced guys even at the expense of one of the core players.

I think this is the most likely outcome. i just can’t help but think that after this season, are we really one or 2 vets away?

You’re probably not but people in management are not smart.

OTT declines both trades, this sets them back years as there is zero quality for top players.

Can't see moving Casey ++ for two years of Chychrun. Just not a smart use of what could be a really solid asset for us.

yeah thats understandable, I was wondering if he would be expendable given the quality at RD already there for NJ. I think Chychrun would be a great fit next to any of the RD options NJ has though, so thought this could also be a good chance for them to buy a player whos historically been better than what he has been this year.

You aren’t going to get back equal or more for one year of Chychrun than you paid, and I doubt it goes any higher than the Hanafin move. That’s probably something closer to Bahl, conditional 3rd to 2nd, l2026 1st. Likely less since offseason deals historically aren’t as pricey as TDL moves

I don't believe the Devils should be looking at just the next two years as their window and then lose a bunch of UFAs when much of the core is in or beginning their prime. Also, as to the historically been better argument, I don't believe it should be on the acquiring team to look at what someone was in prior years, they are getting what they get now.

Id be interested from nashvilles end. Tomasino is talented but doesnt seem like he fits Brunette's system. Glass is basically a bust. Tampas first is really a wild card. That may end up being a really nice pick.

I dont think im at all asking for the same value, Chychrun is less valuable than he was last season. If you think Schmid + Bahl holds the value of a second-round pick then you could remove them altogether and I wouldn't fault you, they were just depth pieces in my eyes. Casey and a second is probably about 2/3 (probably even a bit less) of what we gave up last year imo

I think youre right on the devils contention window, its the same logic I have with this ACGM and the sens. I think for Chychrun though, while you might look at him for what he is right now its pretty clear that this is an outlier season and there is one pretty key contributing factor as to why. He has been dismal on his off-side and hes been forced there the whole season. its pretty much eliminated all of his of mid-ice passing/transition-ability he does have. I think if you put him back on the left side with any of those NJ options at RD and you will get him back to his ceiling
