There are ways LA can sign Byfield long-term, keep Roy and still fillout a competitve lineup. It's definitely not easy, but doable.

Assumption, LA trades Lizzotte, Grundstrom, and Kaliyev.

I don’t see why Byfield takes that contract with the expected increases. Probably can manage it with your underage, but I think 8.5 is the minimum.

Roy would be taking a discount in return for years. He should be in the top 5 defenseman in free agency.

I think you are about $2m short to get Roy and Byfield done.

Byfield really only broke out this season, it could be argued he'd need to play longer to get a bigger contract.

And Roy is signed to 7 years (hoping he extends a similar contract as Anderson), the hope is no one wants to pay him the full 7.

It could be argued with Byfield, but I do think the objective should be to get him locked up ASAP. Wait a year and the argument is you could see a pretty significant increase. It’s a choice. Granted LA may be a little gun shy after that PLD contract.

I always gets nervous wit the premium free agents. Theh generally get a years premium at minimum.

The strong likelihood is Byfield signs a bridge, but I think it's doable to sign him long-term and get Roy.

I would not sign Byfield to a bridge if I were running the team. Boston was in a similar position where they could have signed Swayman last year for significantly less than they are going to sign him this offseason.

Granted, saying you are walking away from Matt Roy is difficult

I wouldn't have traded for PLD or put a bridge on Byfield. Blake is committed to rushing to competitiveness while Kopitar and Doughty are still here.
