No chance Calgary retains 50% on Markstrom for that. Maybe if you change the pick to NJ's 2024 1st but even then Edwards probably won't allow it.

The Devils simply do not need the retention that much. After dealing VV, that nearly $3m cap room cleared up was big.

Most of that cap space came from trading Tofolli not Vanacek. The Vanacek trade had Kahkonen's 2.75 mil cap hit coming back for cap savings of only 650k.

KK is a UFA after this year. So what the Devils would have paid VV is now all on SJS.
