CBJ and NJ don't make good trading partners as per they both suffer from the same problems: plenty of skill that needs insulation.

I was looking at it as they are in different stages of rebuilding...NJD excited it last season, but need to tie up Goalie #1, and every team looks to add scoring - and Gaudreau with a true top center has shown he can be elite. NJD have 2 top centers he could fit with.

CBJ in the other hand probably needs to do a full rest with the new GM TBD. Gaudreau will fetch some assets to start over with thus Casey & the 2nd. The other 2 just balance the cap out

Johnny Hockey wanted to be in the area, never heard he turned them down. And Palat is a Cup Champ, yes... but a lot of guys are Cup Champs that doesn't really mean anything....did Eric Johnson do anything for BUF this year? He is a Cup Champ! It's an overplayed card

In his own words, he was working on a deal with New Jersey and then the opportunity to sign in Columbus came up and he changed course.
