Lottery Miracle and Asset Value Breakdown

Created by: YeahDudeitsChris
Team: 2024-25 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 2, 2024
Published: Apr. 3, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If you hate the trade, reply with counter offers that fit within the trade description rather than the prototypical fan response "never going to happen".

For Reference, This is how I see the value levels from High to Low Value:

S-Level - (Nearly Untouchable) - Franchise players
A-Level - Top 6 Winger, Top pair D-man, Starting Goalie+
B-Level - Middle 6 winger, Top-4 D-man, 1B Goalie
C-Level - Bottom Line / Pair, Backup goalie
Throw in - Most Likely a career AHL guy who can maybe play in 10-15 NHL games a season

Within those Tiers, Here are my values in a little more detail - High to Low (Assuming consistency across 3 seasons, inconsistency lowers value based on volatility)

1. <28 Signed longterm on a team friendly deal
2. D+2 Prospect on projected path
3. <25 Prospect with 1+ years left until RFA.
3. <28 Pending RFA on a team with cap space
4. D+1 Prospect on projected path
5. <28 Pending RFA on a Cap strapped team
6. D+0 Prospect / Prospect falling slightly below expectations
7. 28-32 Signed with <5 years left
8. 32-34 Signed with <2 years left
9. 34+ Signed Pending UFA
10. 28-32 Signed with 7+ years left
11. 32-34 Signed with 4+ years left
12. 34+ Signed with 4+ years left
13. Cap Dump

(There are probably quite a few situations I'm missing so feel free to copy and add/alter in the comments, Also curious how other fanbases value players, This is taylored to NJ's timeline where a long cup window is just opening)

Obviously as with anything, there are special situations where somebody could be in a lower tier but be valued Higher, (Bedard would usually be worth more than the first Tier here)

Trades
1.
NJD
  1. Swayman, Jeremy [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
I'd be willing to part with more B-level assets for Swayman because I love his play, age, and you can't ask for a better locker room to learn in than Boston's over the last 5-10 years but too much more and Sarros should be the target.
BOS
  1. Daws, Nico
  2. Holtz, Alexander
  3. 2025 1st round pick (NJD)
  4. 2025 2nd round pick (NJD)
  5. 2026 2nd round pick (NJD)
2.
NJD
  1. Gudas, Radko ($2,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Another 1 mil to another team for the '26 3rd rounder

I Know you Don't want to move him but as a team that just went through a rebuild, Siegenthaler is a better longerm option (NJ needs his style and I wish he was 3 years younger) and the second rounder is to build a prospect pool (which needs to be excessively deep for trades later and players not meeting expectations)
ANA
  1. Siegenthaler, Jonas
  2. 2025 2nd round pick (WPG)
  3. 2026 3rd round pick (NJD)

An incredibly easy pass for Verbeek

We love Gudas, we aren’t trading him let alone retaining 50%

The LAST position we need // want is LHD, another reason for such an easy pass

let's just think this through logically - you're asking boston to move an elite asset, and you're talking about adding B tier stuff. that doesn't work. Maybe if Boston was in full rebuild and were just trying to accumulate assets, but that's not the case. want an elite asset? give an elite asset. this isn't close. Wouldn't even the bruins front office having a meeting about it.

You fail to realize that keeping Gudas on the roster helps the young kids develop because he can cover for them and allow them to cook and learn without always getting burned for their defensive lapses. Mintyukov and Zellweger developing properly are way more important than the picks and Siegenthaler. We're also loaded up with the kind of depth you get with those pics.

Also, why is Sieg not the perfect running mate for Nemec?

That’s because Holtz is the A-level asset. Hes got top 6 scorer potential written all over him and has developed fantastic this year, if by some miracle NJ won the draft lottery, he just becomes an extra. You’re getting:
1 - A-level asset
2 - B-level assets
2 - C-level assets
In exchange for 1 A-level asset (who might not even resign a and has expressed discontent) in a position where you have excess strength, you get 5 assets (and potentially more) to fill out the rest of your roster and restock your completely empty prospect pool.

ya, no. not how it works when a contender has a proven he can do it at the NHL level (and btw, hes a restricted free agent, and has not expressed discontent). For a team whos focus is not winning now, and winning in the distant future, that may be a strategy. Here, it's just a, "absolutely not. have a good day." Wouldn't get the conversation started.
