Scenario: I force you to trade Lane Hutson and the return must be the best draft pick possible. How high of a pick does he fetch us in return?

I think he'd get us a pick in the 10-15 range, once the top tier of defensemen are off the board I think hutson would be better than the guys on the board. I think most teams would rather an 18 year old with a full ELC over hutson, but it all depends on team needs, hutson is better than every defenseman in the class right now, but when these guys are 20 I think 20 year old hutson ranks 2-6 among the dmen in this draft
Caufield liked this.

Why would Montreal consider trading Hutson? That would be horrendously stupid, we have needed an offensive D man capable of putting up 70+ points and one not only falls into our lap but has also developed, grew and excelled at the next level and here you go wanting to replace him with another lottery ticket that could just as easily turn out to be a dud? How is that even logical?

I ask the question because I don’t share your opinion that he’s the next big thing.

FULL DISCLAIMER: I haven’t seen him play except at the WJC this year and last. He wasn’t the dominant offensive dman I wanted to see.

I hope I’m wrong and he shatters records, but I think he’s closer on the scale to Victor Mete than he is to Fox/Makar/Hughes.

So if I go with that belief, what would his value be, and what could the return be.

I think if a top10 pick was up for grabs I would do it, depending who’s available at that point. Past 10, I think I’d take my chances on Hutson.

Every concern that scouts had with Hutson he has overcome. His size, he grew and is now the same size as Makar, Hughes and Fox were when they broke into the league. His defensive game, he focused on that this season and is a more well rounded player for it. If he was in a redraft at his current height, weight and with the addition of his defensive game he would most certainly go top 10 and possibly top 5. I wouldn't trade Hutson for any draft pick as I am sure Hughes and Gorton wouldn't either. I would be hard pressed to move him for anything less than an elite top line center and even then I might not do it. Hutson doesn't have the same flaws Mete had, his skating, hockey IQ and decision making are all elite, Mete only had the skating. Try watching his next game, he rises to another level to match the importance of the game. Why is it everyone doubts our prospects and wants to redraft? It happened with Caufield, Slafkovsky, Reinbacher, Guhle and now Hutson yoh can trust that this management staff knows more than you do about the prospects
