Not in on Graf but he would certainly aid the situation in DC

Created by: Logicalicesports
Team: 2023-24 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 4, 2024
Published: Apr. 4, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I know the Capitals are not said to be in on the Graf Sweepstakes. But what a help it would be to get another good young NCAA piece and have Leonard on the way. The "rebuild" is already looking more like a retool as the young guys have more or less made it up. It would be massive for the Capitals to expediate that further with another good young piece.

It will not happen but it would certainly help our depth.

ALSO it has been reported that the Rangers are out of the running for GRAF

Just curious as I am not too familiar with the situation

Heard a lot about Graf - why aren't the Caps in on him?

It's never a bad thing to acquire more young guys, but honestly I don't know how he would slot in with all the guys that the caps will have next year:

Ovi Strome Leonard
Miro McMichael Wilson
Milano Lapierre Protas
Malenstyn Dowd Oshie

Oshie is already on the fourth line and shouldn't be. Who does Graf push out? I guess if you're banking on Wilson playing with Dowd and Malenstyn after next season you have some room, but there's really not much need for another guy that isn't a guaranteed impact player. You could argue for moving Milano since he's always dealing with injuries it seems and opening up a spot there, but even then you have guys like Cristall who should make the jump in a year or two, and Oshie can fill the gap in the mean time.

Not really too sure about the situation from the Capitals end of things. It was said he wanted to stay on the East Coast but from what the insiders are saying the teams still in the sweepstakes for him are Minnesota, Nashville, Vegas and Pittsburg. NYR and Boston have fallen out of the running in the past two days. Don't have a ton more info than that

If Oshie were to retire that would be the best case situation for us in terms of our retool. He cannot stay healthy and he may make that decision this off season. Then just move Protas to the fourth line and have Graf either play 2nd or third line depending on where Leonard and WIlson end up slotting

Oshie retiring would probably be best for everyone, I just am so split on whether or not it's going to actually happen. He's definitely still an effective player, but not on a consistent basis. Playing Malenstyn Dowd and Protas together as your "fourth" line (although they'll get more like third line minutes) sounds good to me.

Oshie could opt for some off season surgery to tend to his bang’d up body after years of punishment , which could lead to a year on LTIR.
Players seldom retire if they are under contract. If Oshie hangs em up he’s leaving 4 million on the table.

Exactly, I am very surprised he ended up on San Jose. Must really like their projections
