Moving on up

Created by: Rob32sjsharks
Team: 2025-26 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 8, 2024
Published: Apr. 9, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
24 Draft:
1st OA Macklin Celebrini LHC
14th OA Adam Jiricek RD
33rd OA Jesse Pulkkinen LD
44th OA Dean Letourneau RHC
84th OA Evan Gardner G
25 Draft:
2nd OA Porter Matrone RW
24th OA Carson Cameron RD
42nd OA Wesley Swint II G
58th OA Eetu orphan LW

Sharks under 24 pool is deep and dangerous, but the team is young and inexperienced. Bringing back Granlund and Convincing Chychrun and Saros to come here really solidifies a vet presence on this team!

I toyed with adding a vet winger But with potentially 7-9 forwards in minors and Juniors with NHL caliber ceilings including 3 1st rounders I didn’t want to block anyone long term more that we already have.
Same can be said for Defense with potentially 5 guys in minors/ Juniors with NHL futures. Chrona and Cooley development and Blackwoods play next season will determine if they get resigned, Gardner and Swint would be more thought of as the potential future in net.

Team is developing, lots of kids up on the roster with a lot more waiting in the wings. The future is pretty bright here.

One of the biggest benifits of having such a deep prospect pool is the ability to itemize these guys as grade capitol to acquire the pieces we need in the near future.

Basically exactly what I see us doing. The best teams build from the draft up. Look at Dallas, Carolina etc

Chychrun and Saros won't make it to free agency, You'll need to acquire both. And I don't see Roy leaving the LAK for the likes of the Sharks either. I definitely see him coming home to Detroit this summer.

little early for the 2025 draft slots and AZ (or anyone) is not giving 2x 2nd for 1 x 2nd. I dont see a 34OA having that much better chances than a 42OA to pan out. maybe a 2nd and 5th to move up a bit in the 2nd.

Based on The Athletic's pick valuations, pick 34 is worth 2.5 GSVA, pick 42 is worth 2.0, and 58 is worth 1.2. Generally if a team is trading up they overpay a bit according to those values, so it could be close and potentially could happen. For instance, a couple of years back the Sharks traded pick 11 (5.7 GSVA) to Arizona for 27 (3.2), 34 (2.5), and 45 (1.8). The 45th pick was essentially thrown in for free based on those values, and the gap between 34 and 42+58 is closer at 0.7.

Of course it depends on who the team trading up is targeting more than generic valuations...I suspect if the Sharks are pushing for the trade it would swing in the favor of Arizona instead this time. If the Sharks throw in their 2025 4th which has about 0.5 GSVA in value depending on exact placement (assuming 98 based on these other numbers but if a team gets a compensatory 2nd it might be pushed back slightly) it might be enough.

The hope is he loves California and wants top line min and sees the sharks deep prospect pool and deep pockets and feels comfortable that the rebuild will come around sooner than later. Again this is just being hopeful
As for Chychrun and Saros both could be expendable from their current teams (Saros cause they already have his replacement playing in NHL and Chychrun cause he isn’t happy and Ottawa has cap issues) again these are hopes to rebuild and rebound and in the end money talks.
And like I said in the description the luxury of having a top prospect pool is utilizing assets to acquire needs! Trading for a Saros and Chychrun like D with term isn’t a bad idea if these two piece and all similar pieces sign elsewhere.

i get the values etc (11 to 27 is huge difference) - 2nd round and beyond its about finding diamonds in the rough and Id rather have 2 cracks than 1. i get the value if there is a guy you really want its worth bumping up.

lol this was just playing around I assume we would have to add a 4th or late 3rd to even out, just thinking someone might see a 1st round grade on a player who falls and want to snatch them up!

Celebrini is the gold star in this draft, I would be fine with Lindstrom or Levshunov as option B & C but that instantly hurts and changes things. Stop raining on my parade here I need hope to get through the rest of this god aweful season.

lol that’s exactly why I traded back! I want 2 gambles on pieces. And yes entirely too early for 25 draft projections but I’m just throwing up Hail Mary hopes here to see what best case senario a could look like.

You're no longer excited about drafting RD Logan Hensler in 2025?

Lol not if I can get a monster RW like Matrone!
It honestly depends on what the sharks do at the 24 draft and off-season, if RD is still a glaring need I might switch. But I also took a look at the Jets one of the strongest defensive D cores and 1 1st round pick in that group so I focused more on F skill up high and willing to focus on more D minded Defensemen to shut down opponents rather than Karlsson like D who play like a 3rd winger
