Description
This is a rough idea of what I think we will see going into next year, I think koivunen will get a good shot on the third line and possibly even top six minutes if there are injuries, I think we could see Brayden Yager poke his head into the lineup at points in the season and it’s possible he might stick at some point in the season and find himself a spot in the middle six. I wouldn’t be surprised if we let Ned walk also, lots of rumblings about Letang missing serious time so they may have to use that 3 million I signed Ned with to fill a hole at RD,
I think the idea going into this year is that the penguins “want” Lars eller to lose his job, by that I mean they want to see ponomarev succeed at the nhl level, with DOC cementing his spot in the top six it left a big hole a 3LW which I think koivunen can fill, he has a great set of nhl level skills, all he needs to do is convert it to North American ice, this gives the pens a pretty young 3rd line and in theory forces the old bump and slide (eller to 4th C acciari to wing and poulin at LW) I find it likely that Joel Blomqvist is the backup out of camp (if Ned isn’t resigned)
This would be a massive injection of youth for the pens
StIvany and Shea looked really good at the end this year and Ludvig had a lot of good moments in his rookie year, I added Caleb jones since he is another young d man but he has proven himself more than those other previously mentioned dmen. As for Graves, I’m gonna cut the guy some slack, he had a really bad year for most of the year, but he has been a workhorse his entire career and I think he can figure it out come next year. We also have Owen Pickering in the pipeline who has had a lot of underserved criticism of late for “plateauing” offensively but folks are completely ignoring this massive step he has taken in his defensive game, I know +/- isn’t the most reliable stat but going from -8 last year to +15 this year is pretty significant so don’t be surprised to see him in a penguins sweater soon
Also give Crosby whatever he wants come July first.

Additional Details:
Approximate value for smith, doesn’t have to be to buffalo but it seems like a good fit, despite having a down year smith still has a good shot, nice hands and he kills penalties, ultimately he doesn’t fit in Pittsburgh l because of our current situation, we are trying to open opportunities for young forwards in the middle six, Rust and Bunting obviously aren’t going anywhere, Rakell has seen improvement but his contract would be hard to move, this leaves smith as the odd man out, good player but not a penguin.

Sabres are also looking to incorporate young players into our lineup
We just traded away Okposo, who was our Captain
Why would we wanna bring in ANOTHER old, declining, expensive bottom6 forward ?
Rhetorical question
We wouldn’t

Most teams are on Smith's trade list don't have the cap for him. Plus no way 33 year old Smith is now worth his 5m contract .
Pens have a problem lots of expensive ageing long term contracts. Smith is TDL trade, with retention when the Pens are out of the playoffs.

pretty absurd to think he wouldn't waive to go to a playoff team.

Especially when you consider that he doesn’t like Pittsburgh and never wanted to leave Vegas

There is no need to sign Tankov. I don't think he could clear a medical exam for the NHL after fracturing his c4.

No one is gonna want him

1- he’s old
2- he’s declined A LOT
3- he’s expensive

If DOC is the 1st LW come first game next season I’m gonna want dubas canned. I love DOC but I think he’s our 3rd LW and can fill a role in the top 6 IF needed. They need to either bring Jake back (which is my hope) or find someone to replace him. Totally unserious team if DOC is gonna be 1st liner all year.

I disagree, DOC was a legit nhler the entire year and a serious threat in the last month, he’s only gonna improve next year, I understand he’s no Guentzel but Jake isn’t coming back Bryan Rust just bought his (Guentzels) house in Pittsburgh so I doubt he’s returning, but if for some reason management doesn’t see DOC as a top six option (which I think it’s apparent they do) the. Jake Debrusk is always an option but you would have to sacrifice Ned on FA, keep in mind the penguins played their best hockey this year without Guentzel.

I’m sorry but the production isn’t there, 33 points isn’t gonna cut it on the 1st line, I get he’s gotten better and he could take another step next year sure, but I doubt it’s gonna be big enough to be considered a true top 6 guy. I mean Reilly smith has more points than he did with less games. It’s not all about production sure, but like you need someone who can atleast hit 60, debrusk isn’t that guy either. Also I disagree with the whole they played their best hockey without guentzel, for a decent stretch at the beginning of the year where they were consistently and handily out playing their opponent, they just couldn’t finish, the games at the end of the year they played were good, don’t get me wrong, but they were playing much better in other points, they simply had a combination of getting unlucky, getting goalies, and lacked finishing.

I'd take Smith for a conditional third-rounder if they retain at least $2M.

Three million for a bottom-six/(possible) mid-six grizzled vet winger with 35-50 point potential is not bad at all. In fact, I'd say that he would be pretty attractive to a veteran head coach too.

Of course like you said, it wouldn't work if they go young (Kulich) in a third line role.

If they’d hold $$ then it could be a “maybe”
But he’d still be an old & declining player, so idk?

Used to love him back in the day,
but every time i watch him now he looks like a shell of his old self

Point taken. Maybe he has one more good year in him.

Maybe?
I don’t hate the idea of he’s half off & it’s like a 4th or 5th
But there’s definitely others I’d prefer instead
