Utah isn't Arizona they won't be taking salary to reach the floor with 33 year old 3rd/4th liners.
To get any return you're retaining half then it's marginal at best.</div></div>
This sentiment is getting old, someone will pay a late round pick for him, it’s mostly up to his MNTC. Beauvillier and Zucker both got traded without retention or payment, and they both have similar cap hits to smith, BOTH do not have the production or the experience smith has, and smith can play PK and PP. its getting out of hand hes not that far removed from being an impact player on a Stanley cup winning team, someone will take him, without retention and also not taking picks from us.

Move Malkin to wing
I dont mind the idea of moving him to wing, but imo id like to see lindholm over monohan. Also, if youre moving him to wing and not replacing guentzel, he should be on Sid’s wing, a Malkin-Crosby-Rust 1st line could be nasty.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>Puusty is a regular season warrior. You won't win in the playoffs with a guy like that so why bother. You look at those playoff games there are 50-60 hits in a lot of those games....per side. He's just not built for that. You need that in a 3rd and 4th line when you aren't going to get it out your 1st or 2nd.
If you aren't planning to be a playoff team, it's whatever. Otherwise you need guys with some size who can get in the dirty areas. That's not him.
DOC and Eller can play that game, but I'd rather see both Eller and Acciari on the 4th line. He's 34-35, he doesn't have the legs.
I don't think Nieto is coming back. I could be wrong. But his injury was 8 weeks to recover from. He was out like 16 or something. That doesn't look like a player coming back to me.
I just don't see how this team realistically competes for a cup at this point. It's a low bar to playoffs and they can't get there. Even if they did, they wouldn't stand a chance.
It's better to realize that. Make moves accordingly.
Don't get me wrong I've made a few acgm myself trying to figure out how to get there. Baring a lot of help from the youth with is really low odds. Or some probably not happening trades. It's pretty hard to make this team a real contender.</div></div>
Tons of small guys have found success, and puusty has shown he can play, also the 4th line is usually the more big and tough line, DOC and eller can play the hard nosed places, and were pretty good this year, i dont think its a stretch to say that if DOC and puusty take a step forward that a 3rd line of DOC-Eller-Puusty could be effective in the regular season and the playoffs. I’d agree that id rather see a 4th line for someone-Eller-Acciari though, i saw the Dubas comments on nieto so i am with you that he might be done which sucks, i watched him with the avs and liked what he can bring. I think the chances are less likely, but imo if we see some key changes and see some bounce backs and the ability to finish they could find themselves in a good spot next year. At this point it seems to be luck, which the team had very little of this past year IMO. I think the key here is what Dubas and FSG want, they seem to want to try to compete while not selling the future, so id guess no trades minus maybe trading smith out, and bringing FA’s in.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LuckyMoneyPuck</b></div><div>I don't think they can turn this team into a cup contender anymore.
Making the playoffs is the ceiling and honestly, do we really want to see them make it just to be swept like WSH was?
I am waiting on the trade of Sullivan. That's the first domino that has to fall.
There are just too many holes to fill on this team. The whole 3rd pairing, 1LW, 3RW, 3C, 4LW
Even if they play 1 or 2 of the younger guys, You need to bring in 3-4FA.
Batting 100% on those moves... just not happening.
It's time to start thinking about how they tank. I'd rather have a chance at 1OA in 26 then be mediocre and holding out hope that a 39 year old crosby and 40 year old malkin are going to make a run.</div></div>
I think Puusty is good for the 3RW, good defensively, and can provide some offense, if he takes a step forward next year a line of DOC-Eller-Puusty could be very stingy and provide some offense. 4LW i think depends on nieto’s injury, i liked nieto and he didn’t really have a chance here, so if hes healthy id like to see what he can bring with someone who isn’t Jeff carter on the RW. I agree with the 3rd pairing, i can almost guarantee they are gonna run it back with a POJ-St Ivany 3rd pair which isn’t terrible, but again if both can take some sort of step forward it could be effective. The 1LW is definitely the biggest concern as well as some player (Graves) having bounce back years.

I mean a PLD move like this is interesting, if it works out and PLD has a good bounce back year could be great but could end up worse, but nothing of any real value would be given up, just cap space and the term to PLD. But to me Graves has to be going the other way instead of jarry imo. If it works out malkin can be moved to crosbys wing to hopefully take pressure off him and return him to a more point producing less responsibility role, and have PLD center the 2nd line. but i dont really think this effects the future, just a shot in the dark for a chance for a playoff run.

If a trade like this happens, graves has to be going to LA no question, keep jarry and send graves the other way and even then id say LA would have to add like a 3rd round pick. Graves contract is bad, but PLD’s is a lot worse.

Maybe with Pickering, but Koivunen should be really good, not saying Anaheim doesn’t have a lot that are better, but some are bound to not transfer completely, theyd be dumb to not take that trade, and Pens would be dumb to make that trade.

Things to try this Summer
I would agree eller would be a pretty good 4C, i wish we got to see nieto actually play a decent bit, i watched the avs when they got him near the deadline last year and liked him. He’s got speed can PK and solid defensively, honestly a 4th line of Nieto-Eller-Acciari would be stellar to me if they nieto and acciari stayed healthy. That line has speed, forechecking, energy, defensively reliability, chippiness, and all provide solid PK options. But the key is staying healthy. As for the 3C that’s a bit harder, Stephenson would probably be the most realistic option, but price could be the problem. I think you just hope letang isn’t injured going into the season and that graves finds his game, think those are the options there, the only way i can see us being rid of graves is like a cap dump for cap dump trade, maybe like a PLD for smith and graves thing, but idk that that would happen, if it did i could see putting PLD as the 2C and hoping he gets back to where hes been (and doesn’t cause locker room issues) and put malkin on crosbys wing. As for the LD if they got rid of graves id look at ghost or skjei, but a ghost letang pairing could be incredibly bad at actually defending.

If he is the back up next year they 100% keep jarry, I liked Ned but he’s still not a proven starter. No way they run with a young inexperienced guy and another who never proved to be a good starter.

Am I the only pens fan that thinks Blomqvist should stay in the AHL? Goalies notoriously take longer to make the jump to the NHL, and many teams have star goalie prospects still not consistently playing even back up roles, Levi, Wolf, and Wallstadt. I’m not saying he can’t make the jump, but the others haven’t and Ned while being pretty good for most of the season (same with jarry) didn’t end the greatest.

Why wouldn't NSH re-sign Zucker, instead of taking on Rakell's contract? They could get him for less money and term than Rakell has, they already know how he fits in with their team, and it wouldn't cost them any assets.
If you think Rakell can fetch positive value from a team hoping he can bounce back, I think you'll be disappointed. He's got too much money and term owing.</div></div>

I know nothing about those prospects; but, I do know PIT's system is considered pretty weak, so can't say that really is a needle-mover.
The first is the get here, particularly if we are betting on PIT's decline to continue, and that '26 pick being top-half of the draft (or the '27 one being even higher). It's a better asset the more I think about it, but it's all based around a gamble.</div></div>
That is understandable, eller was just one of our better, tbh probably best FA. It is indeed bad, but Koivunen is a pretty damn good prospect, he’s PPG forward in Liiga, low scoring league and 20yo, Ilyin is 19, half PPG forward in KHL, so not as good, but could be decent if he grows more. Yeah i think both the 2026 and 2027 1st round picks should be untouchable, so imo no shot this happens, but it’s interesting.

Jake Debrusk is always an option but you would have to sacrifice Ned on FA, keep in mind the penguins played their best hockey this year without Guentzel.</div></div>
I’m sorry but the production isn’t there, 33 points isn’t gonna cut it on the 1st line, I get he’s gotten better and he could take another step next year sure, but I doubt it’s gonna be big enough to be considered a true top 6 guy. I mean Reilly smith has more points than he did with less games. It’s not all about production sure, but like you need someone who can atleast hit 60, debrusk isn’t that guy either. Also I disagree with the whole they played their best hockey without guentzel, for a decent stretch at the beginning of the year where they were consistently and handily out playing their opponent, they just couldn’t finish, the games at the end of the year they played were good, don’t get me wrong, but they were playing much better in other points, they simply had a combination of getting unlucky, getting goalies, and lacked finishing.

The situation is different, when all the money is gonna be against the cap, the pens will probably be in the basement, with still some bigger immovable contracts on the books, leaving no cap room for them to say retain for extra picks, take bad contracts on for picks, and possibly take some FAs that they could flip at the TDL. Also the only player id think theyd look at a buyout for is Graves, jarry is decent enough, and no better options exist (idc what pens fans say, Ned is not gonna be a great starter), smith can be traded out for minimal assets due to only having 1 year left (pens fans also make it seem like hes been completely atrocious, and ill agree hes been bad, but not to the extent most other pens fans think), and rakell when he came back from injury was decent enough at his cap hit.

Smith is a dump, so Dubas better learn what a buyout is this summer! It’s by far by biggest problem with him as GM. I’m still mad about him not buying out Granlund and sticking us with EK. The Graves hate is so 2023 folks. He made some modest improvements before the concussion. Dumping him now would cost us a 1st plus and that’s an awful idea.</div></div>
EK has been fine, that trade was fine, his points just weren’t there. Despite that hes a top Dman in creating high danger chances and chances in general. Buying out is definitely not ideal, prefer the trade that was made then buying out granlund, by a lot. As for acciari and nieto, they’re ok, think we could see acciari flourish in the 4RW position, plus hes good on the PK, nieto didnt really get much of a chance with his injury. For Dubas’s biggest problem, not using buyouts definitely isn’t it, it has to be his loyalty to his staff, he refused to fire Keefe, and he’s refused to touch any pens coaching staff, sully i get not firing during the season, no excuse not to show reirdan the door though.
