Preparing For The Draft

Created by: LC_Colorado
Team: 2023-24 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 20, 2024
Published: Apr. 20, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
- Carolina makes the cup final but unfortunately doesn’t win the cup. In this case Pens get Canes 1st
- The Bottom 6 for this team WAS better than the prior season, but still not great. While some youth addition such as Puljujarvi, Puustinen, and Bemstrom was a good attempt to try to young up the bottom 6, other additions such as Nieto and Acciari did not live up to the potential they were given
- The Graves signing was a HORRIBLE move. And the fact Dubas gave him a contract for SIX years only makes this worse, same deal with the Jarry extension. They both gotta go
- Reilly Smith was a good idea on paper, but in execution, not so much
- The Guentzel trade was a “quantity over quality” type trade. Stocking up on draft picks for the future might just be for the better of this team

Dubas has to try again at building a good bottom 6, and also at acquiring a Top pairing LD (could trade EK65 to Ottawa in some kind of Chabot + Chychurn deal, but that prolly wont happen)
Trades
1.
PIT
  1. 2024 4th round pick (STL)

Additional Details:
St Louis loves the guy, he can go back to them!
2.
PIT
  1. 2024 5th round pick (PIT)

  1. Nieto, Matt
Additional Details:
Any team, any price. Just get him off the team
3.

ARI
  1. Graves, Ryan
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
GET HIM OFF THE PENS AT ALL COSTS!!!
4.
PIT
  1. 2024 1st round pick (CAR)
Additional Details:
Canes made finals in this case but lost. Pens get 31st OVR Pick
CAR
  1. 2024 2nd round pick (PHI)
5.
PIT
  1. Kaliyev, Arthur
  2. Turcotte, Alex
  3. 2025 3rd round pick (LAK)
Additional Details:
Idk what value would be. This is probably too much though.
LAK
  1. Jarry, Tristan ($1,375,000 retained)
  2. Smith, Reilly ($2,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Reilly Smith didn’t work well for Pens, neither did Jarry. LA was interested in Smith at TDL, and they also need a goalie since they cant rely on Talbot - Rittich - Copley forever. Perhaps would a Jarry - Talbot tandem work well?

LA also makes another trade to free up cap space
6.
PIT
PHI
  1. Carter, Jeff
Additional Details:
Bro’s retiring after this season, so just ignore this

The Kings can't afford another 7-figure bottom six forward. Smith at $2.5M is still ~$1.65M too expensive.

No thanks on Jarry. I'd rather run with Rittich and Portillo next season.

Reilly Smith to Los Angeles simply doesn't work. Even at half price, $2.5 million is better spent on most of three or four seasons of Viktor Arvidsson or three or four seasons of Blake Lizotte than on one season of Smith. And that's even assuming that we have the money to spend, because it precludes re-signing Matt Roy AND filling the two goalie positions.

Acciari and Nieto are waivers players now. Neither of them has trade value. Smith is a dump, so Dubas better learn what a buyout is this summer! It’s by far by biggest problem with him as GM. I’m still mad about him not buying out Granlund and sticking us with EK. The Graves hate is so 2023 folks. He made some modest improvements before the concussion. Dumping him now would cost us a 1st plus and that’s an awful idea.

I agree with you on why you’d not want Jarry but that’s the goaltending combo you’d want for a full NHL season?

That's what everyone said prior to this season and the Kings goaltending ended up near the tops of the league.

Yes, I'm perfectly content to run with that goaltending tandem.

1. Graves NTC says no.
2. Kings say no.
3. Ned/Blomqvist tandem leaves you in no better shape than currently.
4. John Ludvig isn't it.
5. need a shutdown D guy besides dragon.
6. STL says no.

EK has been fine, that trade was fine, his points just weren’t there. Despite that hes a top Dman in creating high danger chances and chances in general. Buying out is definitely not ideal, prefer the trade that was made then buying out granlund, by a lot. As for acciari and nieto, they’re ok, think we could see acciari flourish in the 4RW position, plus hes good on the PK, nieto didnt really get much of a chance with his injury. For Dubas’s biggest problem, not using buyouts definitely isn’t it, it has to be his loyalty to his staff, he refused to fire Keefe, and he’s refused to touch any pens coaching staff, sully i get not firing during the season, no excuse not to show reirdan the door though.

Don't really see the blues being enthusiastic about acciari. If we really wanted him I think we would have offered him a contract to stay in stl

If they sign Murashov for the AHL I would run that goalie pair. It gives you a legit option if it doesn't work out.

why do people keep trading Nieto.
He can be buried in the AHL and be done with it.

That’s because Talbot had an unusually good year by his standards but Copely is no where to be seen now. Rittich is a good backup and Portillo has no experience. You can work him in gradually but to throw him in 30 plus games in a tandem would be silly. I wouldn’t want the Pens to give Joel Blomqvist 30 games next year. I’d be happy with 10-15.

The Kings play a system that allows average goaltenders to excel. They don't need to invest heavily in goaltending. Portillo was excellent in the AHL this season and will be a more than capable backup. They'll use him for ~25 games next season, ~41 games the following season, and then (assuming he does well), he'll take over the starting job. In the meantime they'll continue to bring on inexpensive "average" goaltenders on one-year deals.

Copley suffered a season-ending injury back in December. That's why he's nowhere to be seen.

Sadly the Accairi ship has sailed. The Blues have 3 options already for the 4C next year
