Let’s review why New Jersey won’t pay that price for Mitch Marner:
1. Mitch Marner is going to be on an expiring contract. All of those assets would essentially be for one year. If they really like the player, they’ll make an offer to him as a free agent in the summer of 2025.
2. He has a no movement clause. He’d have to personally approve of any trade. Toronto’s options are limited trading him. That will decrease his value.
3. Judging by the dozens of armchair GM rosters I’ve seen in capfriendly, it seems as though the Toronto fan base wants to run Marner out of town. Why on earth is New Jersey going to facilitate that happening at a premium price? If New Jersey is going to take on Mitch Marner, it will be for pennies on the dollar.
4. He is not helping himself at all in this playoff series against Boston. Mitch Marner is not a premium asset at this time; he is a distressed asset that’s going to cost a little less than $11M against next year’s salary cap no matter where he plays assuming Toronto doesn’t want to retain on his salary in a trade.
