Stats per @STLBluesViews on X:

St. Louis Blues five-on-five ranks in 2023-24:

27th in GF/60 (2.27)
18th in GA/60 (2.54)
27th in xGF/60 (2.38)
28th in xGA/60 (2.91)

26th in GF% (47.1%)
28th in SF% (45.6%)
29th in CF% (45.1%)
30th in xGF% (44.9%)

8th in SV% (.921)
4th in GSAx (+24.61)

Let's say they go the draft and trade Binnington and sign a guy like Talbot or Vanecek to be the 1A in front of Hofer; trade Buchnevich for futures and keep Bannister for another year. So 2024-25 looks something like:

Neighbours-Thomas-Kyrou
Bolduc-Schenn-Saad
Toropchenko-Hayes-Sylvegard
Walker-Alexandrov-Sundqvist

Leddy-Parayko
Krug-Kessel
Perunovich-Faulk

Talbot
Hofer

With below average goaltending, plus the natural progression of some rebuilders below them in standings, chances are they finish bottom 5-ish Then give me some lottery luck and James Hagens. Now Snuggerud, Dvorsky, Lindstein, etc are coming in - plus a couple more 1st round selections - and the money is there for some big signings. Re-tool over?

Leafs can’t afford Binnington’s cap hit. Leafs don’t have the luxury of committing that much $ to goalie position. And it’s too much to spend on an inconsistent goalie anyway; good year in 2023 but coming off a few down years. Position is voodoo for 95% of nhl goalies

I agree with you about the voodoo, and honestly the Blues might get poor goaltending results by keeping their same tandem. But I do think teams will poke around on Binnington after his performance this year, maybe not Leafs.

Could be - a lot of teams (Avs, Devils, Sens) to name a few need goalie upgrade. The $6M ticket may be tough to move though

He really only had one bad year and one bad playoff series

    Otherwise he’s been great

He’s had a good year, but hard to argue 2021-22 or 2022-23 weren’t down years (GAA >3.0, sv% of 0.901 & 0.894 & negative saves above expected) . Just personal opinion - very few goalies deserve term and aav > $3.0M; performance is too variable for 95-98% of nhl goalies.

That’s very fair, I will say those two years our defense was a black hole, but 21 he was good, just hung out to dry at least once a game usually more

Last year, year he let in way to many softies
