Trades
1.
BUF
  1. Ehlers, Nikolaj
  2. 2024 5th round pick (WPG)
Additional Details:
Similar to the Jeff Skinner trade the Sabres made a while ago. A player of his production on an expiring contract probably goes for similar value
WPG
  1. Kisakov, Alexander
  2. 2024 2nd round pick (BUF)
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (BUF)
2.
BUF
  1. Couturier, Sean ($2,750,000 retained)
  2. 2025 1st round pick (COL)
  3. 2025 2nd round pick (ANA)
  4. 2025 5th round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
Cap dump trades of close value for players with only 1-2 years remaining have fetched 1st round picks. Taking on Couturier’s contract for the next 6 years at 5 million should get a nice return. Philly gets a young RHD in Jokiharju to fill out the back of their lineup.
PHI
  1. Jokiharju, Henri [RFA Rights]
  2. Lindgren, Mats [Reserve List]

I doubt you get a 1st+ from Philly if they're already retaining, but it is a long contract so maybe

If philly is retaining for 234 years, we aren't getting picks

Saving 5 million for 6 years for an older player is absolutely worth a 1st. Some teams part with 1sts to dump that much salary for just 1-2 seasons

The length of the deal is the real factor here. If he only had like 1-2 years left I would be fine with giving up assets for him. Plus it’s Colorado’s pick which would most likely be 28-32 so it’s not like giving up a potential top 15 pick

Teams that are desperate because they are over the cap and are trying to win a cup.

Can you cite an example that isn't marleau?

https://puckpedia.com/PerriCapRelief Here’s a great article on the trade value of cap relief using previous trades as a basis

A small left wing doesn't fill any need for the Jets. They say no.

Kisakov isn’t really the centerpiece of the deal so he could easily be replaced with any other one of Buffalo’s B level prospects that would fill a need for WPG

It would need to be an RHD or 2C most likely, as those are the Jets biggest needs and then, depending on the prospect, the 2nds may need to become 1 first.

There’s 0 chance the Flyers trade Coots this offseason, they will just hope he has a great year next year and maybe try to move him then with less retention.

Please give me an example of a team retaining almost $20M on a player and paying multiple high picks for a team to take the player?

It doesn’t happen.

I would think of it as saving 30 million over 6 years which is absolutely worth a 1st plus the assets going the other way. You’re right though there aren’t many examples of teams trading 5+ years of a bad contract but I think the value is adequate

If the sabres were to trade the 27 million of skinner’s contract this off-season I would think it would cost roughly the same except for the fact that he doesn’t come with the injury concerns and has had more production in recent years

There is no world in which the Flyers have any interest in this kind of a trade. First, they would be trading Couturier at his absolute lowest value, which is bad business. Second, and perhaps more important, is the Flyers are owned by Comcast, and one advantage of deep pocket ownership is that they don't need to chase cost savings at the expense of the roster and future prospects of the team. The Flyers are not the Winnipeg Jets. They are not parting with valuable draft compensation critical to their rebuild to save some cash.

It’s not lol. Ur getting a 2C for a few years that will then be a 3C for $5M a year. Thats less than the going rate for 2Cs and will be the correct rate for 3Cs in a few years when the cap rises. If you’re so concerned about his injury history u wouldn’t trade for him, but the Flyers aren’t retaining and paying to dump him again it literally doesn’t happen. You either retain and trade for little or nothing or pay to dump

3 years of Skinner versus 6 years of Coots is not the same. Teams don’t take up a retention slot for 6 years unless ur Mine Grier making stupid moves. And even in that case they are getting paid handsomely for it not the other way around
