Additional Details:
Based on what Frank Seravalli said, Utah has already reached out to Toronto and wants to get Marner. He also mentioned that the return would likely be underwhelming with a swap of 1sts + a mid-tier (not Cooley/Geekie) prospect coming back to Toronto.

This seems like a great price for Utah to get Marner, especially if it comes with an extension. (He also said the deal wouldn't go through if Marner didn't agree to an extension).

This would help restock the farm and clear up all of Mitch's cap space.

Seravalli isn't a hockey insider, he might as well be a capfriendly acgm manager because he creates his own b.s.

Leafs aren't moving Marner if the price is less than your run of the mill top 6 deadline add lmao. Plus, everyone knows Frank has literally no connections within the Toronto front office, he generally sucks at his job

You mean he breaks stories while watching the sports ticker on TSN and Sportsnet after they break the story.

He is a laughable hack.

Don't know if Servalli said was true, but as you posted the Leafs return might be pretty accurate from any team. The return isn't going that much players or picks.
The true return for Marner isn't so much the trade but utilizing the 11m cap space next season.

🎯

Although I suspect they will have to take back salary which isn't a bad thing all things considered, they'll probs get a 1st and a 3-6 million dollar middle/top 6 foward or top 4 d-man with some term

Than again with his NMC, Marner can really hand tie the leafs like Senko and Giroux did

For example, he said that the Sens were interviewing Travis Green a full week before anyone else said anything about Green.

Marner won't be waiving without a new contract in hand. Otherwise he stay a Leafs so he can get good numbers in his contract year. If he's the Leafs "rental" next season...so be it.
Out of playoffs teams should be trading UFAs by TDL, but playoff teams don't trade their upcoming UFAs. I never worry if UFAs "walk for nothing", as good GMs just replace the player with other player(s) for the same cap.

Yeah, a lot of people are underrating the benefit of the Leafs taking back salary in a Marner trade, and suggesting a 3rd team or the Leafs retain on him. I could see them land both a middle/top 6 F and a top 4 D-man and a 1st (2025 or later-moving up the draft is a waste of Marner's value) with one of the players being on an expiring deal/pending RFA and the other with term and possibly another pick or prospect. In the case of UTAH, they have a ton of cap space and a lot of pending RFAs, so it could be something like Hayton+Durzi+2025 1st+a prospect and then UTAH might go out and acquire Montour's signing rights or maybe they deal someone else instead of Durzi.

That being said all signs point to Marner holding the Leafs hostage. The best course of action is to try to sign him for ~11.5M, but if he doesn't want to leave anything on the table then see if he's willing to waive. I think the Leafs best bet is to try trading him to Vegas for Theodore + Karlsson + maybe some futures.

Marner will be traded for a RHD and Will Marner waive his NMC. So instead of Trading Marner for a RHD but your banking on the leafs to get those RHD in FA when others will bidding on them so what happens when you miss out on all those RHD and you traded Marner for a prospect. no good business

Haven't heard anyone else mention it but you could be right about a 3rd team. He makes league min this year after his signing bonus is paid so if the deal happens after July 1st then you could get someone like Chicago to retain $5.5M for a 3rd (only ~$387,500k in real money) and suddenly even if its a one year rental that is really attractive. Could also be really attractive to someone like Minnesota who have $14M in read cap next year but then just $1.6M after that so they can get him cheap next year then afford his full salary afterwards. Likely a few others teams in a similar position with a veteran or bad contract expiring who can only take $2.5M or $5.5M next year but can afford the full $11.5-$12M the year after.

I was actually saying I'm against the idea. For a 3rd team to be involved would just waterdown the already reduced return. Better off getting a serviceable player (which could be a vet) in addition to a valuable roster player, don't want to take on a bad expiring contract either. The goal is to have a chance to win after all.
