Draft day blockbuster

Created by: fatkidinc
Team: 2023-24 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: May 8, 2024
Published: May 8, 2024
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
TOR: Recieves the 5oa pick (Zayne Parekh) and gets a big scoring pp quaterback dman with more skills on defence than rielly. Hopefully in 2 years he can be a top 4 minute muncher on an elc contract, allowing toronto to bolster their roster elsewhere with the cap saved. They also receive a skilled and defensively responsible 3c on a cheap deal with term. This will allow them to resign domi to play on Matthews’ wing instead of being forced to play center. They grab barron who is on an elc right now and can hopefully do the same thing Parkeh will do for them in the future for the next couple seasons. Montreal throws a second into the deal to help toronto fill their shallow prospect pool (should take another dman). Their hands are forced to trade marner, that combined with no retention makes me think that it wouldnt take more than this. Since Toronto is saving over 8 mil in this deal they can either make a trade or sign an impactful player in fa to replace some of the scoring marner brought

NYR RECEIVES: Marner 50% retained plugs the only hole that they have on the team which is 1rw. Can also set up 2 amazing scoring lines now that you have 2 elite playmakers and 2 elite scorers. Next year is marners last, and with what they’re giving up in this deal, it cant just be a rental. Sign and trade 11x8. Next year is the year to go for it though

MTL RECEIVES: Late ny 1st rounder this year where we can hopefully find a center to try and replace newhook in the future. Main piece is Laf though obviously, who had a breakout season this year with 17:00 toi. Montreal can make him the guy and give him >20:00. Dont be surprised if when he returns to an environment hes more acclimated to in montreal, he immediately becomes over ppg next season. Laf fits montreals timeline much better than he does the rangers’ too. Montreal doesnt want the 5oa pick since the draft board will be filled with defencemen at that point, and we are already log jammed on both sides.

This is weird. I'd rather have Marner than Laf and a late 1st. Am I the only one?

I mean you can enjoy paying Marner $11m+ and 1st round exits lol

I would only do it as a sign & trade, which is not possible with the 2024 pick, which is why this never happens.

Rangers pass, plus that doesn't get you Marner anyway.

Be honest now, would you rather have a 27 year old Panarin or 22 year old Lafreniere and a late 1st? I think most reasonable people take the 27 year old Panarin, which is a good comparable to Marner.

Rangers pass, even at 50%. Rangers wouldn't be able to resign him. Makes no sense to trade Laf and a first for a rental.

I don’t think Marner is on Panarin’s level offensively and you can call me a homer

Can Marner carry a team like Panarin did/does?

My rationale for wanting laf over marner was the contract situation. If marner was to resign with us (high taxes in mtl + rebuilding team) I cant see the aav being under 12 mil. Currently he’s obviously a better player, but id feel more comfortable taking a shot on laf breaking out into a superstar on a contract similar to caufield’s. Even if laf never becomes better than marner, I think he will undoubtedly be on a better contract value wise, and those are the type of deals you need to win cups

Can only retain on 3 max.
Pass on Marner and power forward Laf is not going anywhere.

Look at the production during each of their 23-26 year old seasons in the league both in season and during the playoffs. Marner has the slight edge.

I think everyone is a homer... So it's not a bad word in my mind!

Hard to compare when Marner was a rookie in the league at age 19 and Panarin was a rookie in the league at age 24

Marner had 5 years to learn the NHL style and grow by the time Panarin got into the league
