Description
Oliver Kylington gives Ottawa another potentially explosive defensive prospect to go with Chabot. Rittich fills a need for a good goaltending prospect who is almost NHL ready. Shinkaruk can play a depth scoring type role on Ottawa this season, and could blossom into a top-6 forward. Stajan is included for salary purposes and can fill a 4th line role on Ottawa, and two high picks.

It's very possible that Stone has played his way out of Ottawa's price range, especially with Karlsson's upcoming deal. Stone will likely ask for upwards of 6M this offseason, more even if the contracts around the league continue to be out-of-whack. Ottawa also needs new deals for Turris (top-line C money) and Anderson (top G money) and would be lucky to get the two signed for around 12M combined. One of those three may be the odd man out, and Ottawa could get good value for stone.

Why would Ottawa be cap hell compared to Calgary? Seems to me that Calgary has way more cap issues the futture. Would think Ottawa would want some players(s) that are NHL good right now instead of cap dumps and futures.

It's absolutely not a bad deal, I'll give you that. As a Sens fan, I'd want a ridiculous collection of prospects and picks for Stone; he is our best forward (or at least competing with Turris and Hoffman for that spot) so we'd expect a lot. You've done that. Kylington is a stud in the making, Shinkaruk still has a lot of potential, and I don't hate Rittich. But if I'm Calgary, I do that trade in a heartbeat 100 times out of 100, and I think that shows that maybe we'd need a bit more for it to actually go through.

However, I don't think he even gets traded in the first place to make it a reality. Turris probably gets in the 6-7 range, as would Stone. We have 22 million to sign Turris, Ceci and Stone, and maybe Anderson. Karlsson is looking at 10-12 the following year, which we still have plenty of room for due to Burrows, Thompson, Brassard, and likely MacArthur no longer needing to be paid. Anderson is 36 years old, and we've built Condon's contract in a way that makes it seem like we're banking on him being a stop gap starter due to a retirement from Andy. I don't expect a renewal for Craig, and if he does manage to get one, it won't be a ridiculous price. All of this assuming none of them take hometown discounts, that we don't move Phaneuf or Ryan in some way, and not factoring in the value we've set within the team (Hoffman is getting just over 5M and performs equal to Turris and Stone after all).

Barring massive years (like 70+ dominant years) from Turris and Stone, there would be no situation in which he becomes too expensive for us. We will pay him and can do so without destroying our cap situation. In the event that they do, we probably try to make moves on Ryan or Phaneuf. If not, your package with maybe a few more tweaks (upgrading Rittich for example) would probably be a damn good offer.

Right now Calgary has two important signings for the next two offseasons, being Backlund next season, and Tkachuk the year after. Three years from now is when it might get dicey with Frolik, Brodie and Hamonic needing new deals as well. What Calgary doesn't have is a big money, long term bad contract. They have Brouwer signed on a bad deal for the next three years, but his contract should be moveable if they absolutely have to, and a buyout wouldn't hurt them too much.

Ottawa is in a worse cap situation than Calgary, because they have two mammoth bad contracts in Ryan and Phaneuf. Unless they retain a lot of salary, those contracts are almost unmovable. When Karlsson signs for what many are expecting to be McDavid money, they will have him, Phaneuf and Ryan accounting for over 26M, or a 3rd of the salary cap. This is what will likely push out on of Stone, Turris and Anderson, who if signed and added to the EK, Ryan and Phaneuf contracts, will probably account for around 45M for those 6 players. Ceci will need a new deal as well, let's say he has a good year and gets decent top-4 money, that's another 4-5M. Throw in Hoffman, McArthur, Smith, Pageau and Condon, and that's around 66M for 12 players, leaving only 9M to sign 11 players. And that assumes they let Brassard go. That looks like cap hell to me.

CGY was able to get Monahan, Gaudreau, Hamilton and Giordano on team friendly deals, and if they can move Brouwer, they would have very few problems for the foreseeable future.

Stone is a solid RW'r but that price is way to high!

Maybe Kylington, Rittich and Foo plus a 2nd or 3rd as prospects where all 3 have a shot at cracking the line up?
- if Brouwer or Stajan are part of the deal thaen some retained Salary would be a must but don't see Sen's wanting Brouwer and think Calgary will want Stajan for his last year to mentor a few of our younger guys... Foo / Lazar / Janko...

I'm a Flames fan that lives in Ottawa, and I can tell you that the Sens organization values Stone very highly, and rightly so. He might be the top two-way RW in the league and he brings very good offense. Given the organizational depth at Defence and in Goal, I would be comfortable giving up Kylington and Rittich, and Shinkaruk will have a difficult time cracking Calgary's lineup any time soon. The two picks, if all goes well, should be low in their respective rounds, and Calgary has the organizational depth and youth to skip a year or two at the draft. I think the team has enough veteran leadership that we can part with Stajan. It was the 3M line, not his that we would put out against the other team's top lines, and we would be better served with younger players with more energy on the 4th line. It's a lot to give up for one player, but if CGY wants to take advantage of their depth and trade for a potential 25 year old star RW, I would be comfortable with this deal.

If we're looking 3 years intot he future, chances are Gio will somehow be gone which frees up $6mil to be shared by the 3 players you mentioned.
Plus Brouwer is done after yr 3 so there's another 4.5mil. I see no issues keeping at the very least Brodie and Hamonic. Frolik will be dependant on how the young kids play in the next 3 yrs.
