Two Years Out

Created by: CD282
Team: 2019-20 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 17, 2017
Published: Aug. 17, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
So much firepower up front + a decent young defense corps = letting Talbot walk.

With Ellis and Brossoit tracking well at this point - and Starrett and Wells coming on strong - it's conceivable that Edmonton would be able to do the "Matt Murray" thing and go with the youngsters exclusively. In this scenario I have Ellis and Brossoit playing 1A and 1B, but Starrett could be in the mix too. Remember, this is the 2019-20 season, and one of these three goalies could easily become a full-time starter with two more years of development.

Another option, rather than signing Seguin, would be to sign Erik Karlsson 7 x $9MM.

Note that this team still has Yamamoto, Benson, Mantha and Lagesson bubbling under, plus as-yet-unsigned 2017 picks Samorukov, Safin and Maksimov, plus an unknown quantity of 2018 and 2019 draft picks.

Other teams have cap issues too. Trading Sekera and Russel for picks and not players (money) seems hopeful for the Oilers, but doubtful.

If that was the case then nobody would ever sign a UFA.

In the description you have Erik Karlsson getting 9 mill for 7 years if that's all it takes then the Sens will have no problem signing him back.

Depends what he wants to do, of course. He will be a UFA and can thus sign with any team he chooses. The Sens will have no problem signing him if he chooses to sign with the Sens. They no longer hold his rights a/o July 1, 2019.

IF he decides to sign elsewhere it will be because of money. Especially to another Canadian team

Maybe. Players sign where they sign for a variety of reasons. He might want to go to a more competitive squad for more chances to win a Cup, you never know. And why the dig at Canadian teams? It's not like Karlsson grew up in a balmy clime. Anyhow, my team shows Seguin signed, not Karlsson.

Not a dig at Canadian teams just the Canadian dollar and taxes

Players get paid in US dollars no matter where they play. And Alberta taxes are about average for the league. Taxes due on a $9,000,000 salary in Edmonton compared to NHL cities with contending teams:

$349,380 cheaper in Edmonton than if playing for the New York Rangers
$433,602 more in Edmonton than Chicago
$111,161 cheaper than Minnesota
$492,812 cheaper than Ottawa (or Toronto)
$224,802 more than Pittsburgh (or Philadelphia)
$402,034 cheaper than San Jose / Anaheim / LA
$141,329 more than St. Louis
$29,923 cheaper than Washington

Well then they would just sign UFAa. To think the Oilers will get good picks is the fallacy.

This would be true if players paid their salaries in personal taxes. They don't. They are cooperations which is Canada is much lower rate than the US. And player do pay some of their taxes based on their residence not where their home teams are based. Please know something about tax law, instead of recalling this useless dribble that was put out by lazy sportswriters. What you wrote just isn't factual

Whether the picks were good or not wasn't his point.

Players are Co-operations? Or did you mean Corporations? Okay, lets assume the latter and let's go with your assertion that Canada has much lower corporate rates than the US and... that strengthens my argument. Thanks for the support.

Residency laws can be complex, but in Canada generally if you're in the country more than 183 days (covered in an NHL season) in any given tax year you are deemed a resident for tax purposes and taxed accordingly. US citizens are not taxed based on residency, which complicates things for American players who play in Canada, as they get taxed twice, although not at the respective full rates.

None of what I wrote came from sportswriters, by the way. Please explain what isn't factual about what I wrote. Apart from the rather simplistic approach (tax laws are complex and the amount of tax owing varies significantly from person to person, even in those in similar circumstances), everything I wrote was factual.

Your need to stoop to ad hominem attacks is unfortunate, and at the same time, revealing.

Have a great evening, sir.
