Caps getting cap relief

Created by: steveospeak

Description
The Capitals currently can't field a 23 man roster if they want their top prospect Vrana to be a part of it so someone has to go. Also money will be tight going into next season, showing just how burdensome Orpik's contract is.

This is about putting the best 23 man roster on ice for the 2017/18 season and one that has a chance to fight for the cup. At the same time the idea is to clear some cap going forward so as to not lose Carlson in the offseason and have some cap space to replace Eller.

I am sure Caps fans will balk, but Orpik doesn't have positive value and this team is struggling with him eating so much cap space. By dealing him, the Caps add two quality bottom 6 wingers, plus replace him with McNabb who should offer the same production he does. Additionally these deals leave extra cap room for any in season additions.

We don't need to carry 23 guys. We can carry one extra for forward and defense and we'll be fine

Islanders aren't going into another 3 man goalie wheel. They would have to find a a taker on Greiss. With Soderstrom coming over next year there is no room for Grubauer, even though he would probably be the best of the three.

Yeah Islanders would need to move a goalie, but the idea was they want to build a contender now in hopes of swaying Tavares, best way to do that is improve in goal.

How many teams roll with a 22 man line-up with zero cap room for improvements and hope to contend. If the Caps seriously try to do that they are screwed this year.

I'm sure there are a crap load in NHL history that won a Cup that way. Really doesn't matter if you have 20 or 23 guys, as long as you can field a good team.

I'd love for you to find them, and it's not like the Caps have a set roster top to bottom, they are relying on a number of rookies for key roles

2 really poor trades. Isles wouldn't give up that much for a player they don't need, and that is way too much for the Caps to give up for McNabb. Plus the Caps might be as well off giving time to their prospects rather than trading for guys to fill the lineup.

Islanders don't need a goalie? That seems off base, their offense should be really good and defense pretty solid, but their goalie play is seriously lacking.

As the explanation says, for the Caps it's about getting cap relief from Orpik's contract. Of course McNabb isn't worth that, but taking on Orpiks contract is. That deal is paralyzing the Capitals right now, and why their impressive bottom 6 and defensive units look a lot worse than they did a year ago.

Also, once you make the playoffs, you can go over the cap. So once we're in, we can carry 23 players and be over the cap

No, the Isles don't need a goalie. They have Halak and Greiss.

Losing all those assets to get rid of Orpik's deal isn't even close to worth it. The Caps can carry 22 players, which is what they did nearly all of last season, and till bank cap space. And they wouldn't be having this cap crunch if BMac had signed Kuz and Orlov to good deals. Orpik's deal is one of the problems, but not the only one. They'd be better sitting tight and letting their prospects get time then bringing in 2 washed up botom-6 forwards and losing assets for nothing.
