Deal with MTL

Created by: flamesfan419
Team: 2017-18 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 11, 2017

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Saw a report that Bergevin said he might be willing to use the remaining MTL cap space to take on some other clubs bad contract....if the price was right.
-------
So let's explore the possibility of moving Brouwer out East.
-------
Before you crap on thee Duchene trade, please hear me out. COL is getting 2 NHL ready Dmen, a former 1st rounder in Lazar who will given all the minutes he wants in COL compared to being buried on the 4th line in CGY.
-------
The looking forward part of all this in my mind breaks down like this......Duchene comes in and is rejuvinated on a young surging team. Puts up the kind of numbers people expect of him and has a positive influence on Bennett.
-------
This brings us to year 2 of the deal. IF Duchene continues to soar in CGY that could easily translate in him becoming a valuable trade piece for us to get high returns, OR it makes Gaudreau expendable who will also give us a high return. You'd have to figure 1-3 of our AHL kids will earn full time roles by year 2. So we have options to restock the cupboard with picks.
Trades
1.
CGY
  1. Benn, Jordie
Additional Details:
I figure we'd have to be willing to take back at least 1 contract to make the deal work. Serviceable Dman allows options for the kids to groom.
2.
CGY
  1. Duchene, Matt
  2. 2018 5th round pick (COL)

I read your description and I'm still going to crap on the Duchene trade.

This is one of the worst proposals I've seen for Duchene... 2 bottom pairing D-men, a failed goalie prospect, another failed prospect and a 1st round pick 3 years from now. Horrible. How about you trade Monahan and a 5th to Edmonton for Eric Gryba, Matt Benning, a 2020 1st, Roman Horak and Shane Starrett?

I think both deals are pretty bad to be honest.

You are dumping about 80% of Brouwer's contract for 3 years on a team and aren't really giving them anything to make it worth their while. Andersson is okay and might have an NHL future, but he really doesn't move the needle, esp. since it's for 3 years of Brouwer. Poirer doesn't seem to have much prospect value. On top of that you are actually getting back something of value (albeit small value), it's not like its for a 7th rounder or something. Benn is an actual NHL'er. I don't know if the two prospects alone would be worth Benn. Benn was just traded for a 4th round pick and a 7th D. You are basically asking MTL to take about the same value and a big contract in return.

As for the Duchene deal Colorado is getting nothing here. If they were willing to accept this type of deal of non-prospects and a vet 3rd pairing defender, plus a future first they would have easily traded Duchene by now. With not having a 1st in 2018, Calgary will have to pay quite a bit more than other contenders willing/able to flip that pick.

I am willing to hold my nose a do a stinky deal to lose Brouwer but when this all boils out, we are doing a six player and one first for Duchene and a fifth...... Hmmm

Ya never know unless you try. I'm sure we can all agree there have been worse trades in NHL history.
All this being "for fun", just thought I'd throw it out there.

When it comes to Duchene, I'd almost guarantee whatever the return Sakic gets won't be anywhere near what he originally wanted.
He's waited too long and drove the value down so much. And IF Duchene shows up to camp and starts the season, once COL starts
to lose numerous games once again, and his production is back in the toilet, his value will sink even farther.
On the flip side, holding out and not showing up also does nothing to help get Duchene out of a bad situation.

Duchene won 60% of his faceoffs last year. Just sayin' if he's on the team (or any team) he centers. Bennett would be moved to the wing.
