Fair, but could you give some reasoning as to why? I look at these trades and see value going both directions. I'll admit I don't really have a good idea on other teams needs moving forward.

Are you kidding? This isn't 2014 anymore.
Seabrook is signed for another EIGHT years at a higher cap hit, his contract is one of the few actually worse than Lucic's.

Biggest surprise per team
For the Oilers I'd say it was Jujhar Khaira this year. Last year it would have been Benning for sure as he came out of nowhere to play top 4 minutes. This year however, he's played like garbage and did not live up to expectations at all. He was a bottom pairing guy who was healthy scatched a few times.
Khaira on the other hand had some dominant stretches and really played well in his role. In a year where pretty much everything went wrong, Khaira's play was one of the very few bright spots.

Pretty good, but I think you do whatever you can at forward to fit Josi on the back end. I'd say there is definitely better options out there for cheaper than Vanek or Sheahan.

Last year that statement is probably correct. Klefbom played great last year and Nurse still had some growing pains. This year Nurse has taken a massive leap forward and Klefbom has taken a step back for sure.

The price for Nurse would be similar to the price for McAvoy. McAvoy's got more value, but Nurse is still Edmonton's best d-man and is still very young. Although with Chia at the wheel who knows.

2018/2019 Oilers
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FullSend</b></div><div>Let’s be real though. Even last year, Sekera’s defense was <strong>okay</strong> at best, but it has been overshadowed by what he can do on the PP and he being a 30 point Dman, he was an okay PK Dman. This year, coming back from injury, he hasn’t looked good at all in his few games or here’s a better way to describe him.. “non existent”. 1 measly point in 18 games and A -10, but the advanced stats go even deeper than that I guess. He has ultimately been shown out by Klefbom and Nurse for the 2 PP units, so what does the 5.5 mill D man do now? I say just deal him and his contract away, especially if we’re trading for a top 4 Dman now, if we are, will you want a 3rd pairing Dman? I wouldn’t
Don’t trade Russell, he’s A 5th D who can easily play a top 4 role, if he’s keeping it simple, doing his thing on D, not doing too much, he’s a great Dman, he’s just a mill overpaid in my eyes, Sekera on the other hand..</div></div>
I think you're undervaluing what Sekera brought to the table last year. He was constant all year, anchored the second pairing and gave quality minutes every game. He was a solid, dependable guy through and through, and most definitely a top 4 guy. I don't think Edmonton is in a position to just give those guys away. He's coming off a serious knee injury and trying to catch up to the speed of the game mid-season. On this dumpster fire of a team that makes it even more difficult than it already is. Give him another year and see if he can regain his form. He's basically admitted he's not even 100% yet.
Don't get me wrong, I'd deal Sekera if it was a "hockey trade", but not just for the sake of saving cap space. Ya he's overpaid, but I'd take a healthy Sekera over a healthy Russell (who is also overpaid) 10 times out of 10.
You say you like Russell because he's a 5th D who can play a top 4 role. But Sekera is already a top 4 D who when healthy can play a 1st pairing role in a pinch. Isn't that more valuable than a 5th who can play top 4?

Ya you're probably right. I don't think he gets 5 from anyone though, other than maybe ARZ or BUF. The actual number probably comes in right around the 4.25 he's making now.

Ya, I was thinking about that. Truth is that the market for free agents has been dropping the past couple off seasons. The big deals aren't out there like they used to be. 3.75 might be low, but I don't think its anything close to a guarantee he gets a raise.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>FullSend</b></div><div>I’d definitely sign Hornqvist to that if he wants it, as well as Brodziak, I think he has a home in Edmonton.
First trade is okay, if I’m looking Carolina, the only duo i want is Skinner and Faulk, which of course we add to.
Second trade is a no from Edmonton, looking at Chia’s ask price for Maroon, A prospect like Lemieux isn’t what he’s looking for.
For the Oilers, I think waiving Sekera’s clauses on his terms and dumping is ideal, trading Strome, Letestu, Maroon, Cammaleri needs to happen</div></div>
I'd rather get a center back to keep the depth, the whole basis of the Carolina trade is they are giving up something on defence to gain some offence (Benning is a downgrade for Carolina, but Nuge is an upgrade over Rask). If it's Skinner coming back I don't think they'd be able to justify the downgrade from Faulk to Benning.
Fair - but do you really think Chia will be able to get more? Lemieux is having a pretty good 2nd season in the AHL at almost a ppg. Plus he might be a good response to Tkachuk down in Calgary.
I'd like to wait on Sekera, see how he does next year. If he get's back to what he was last year he's a valuable piece on the back end, and then Russel is the guy to move.

I like the idea of Nuge and Benning for Faulk and Lindholm. I just did one that I didn't publish that was Nuge, Benning +picks for Faulk and Rask. So I like that premise and think it works well for both teams. I don't think you're getting Fabbri for Maroon or Nyquist for Strome though.

Right, the smart thing to do would be to overpay for some marginal upgrades in hopes of *maybe* making it and then getting swept in the 1st round. And Bean isn't at least 2 years away btw, he almost made it out of camp this year.
Following your logic, Toronto should trade Dermott and Liljegren to Calgary for Stone. Liljegren is 2 years away at least and Stone might be an upgrade to Dermott presently. It's worth it because you'll be better right now, maybe Toronto might be able to get into the 2nd round after a trade like this.

Overpay on Carolina's part in my mind. Gardiner doesn't do much for Carolina considering their strength is on defense. I'd argue that Pesce is even more valuable than Gardiner. Leivo and Rychel don't really add much value. So you're basically asking Carolina to downgrade or make a lateral move at best on defense, take on an extra contract, give you 2 of their top prospects, and give up their best face-off guy for 20 games of Bozak and JVR + a late 1st. I wouldn't do it if I was Carolina.

Nash's days as a 40 goal scorer are long gone. He's basically a 3rd liner now. He does not get you a 1st rounder. Last year the only trade deadline deals that included 1st round picks were Shattenkirk and Hanzal. Nash's value is significantly lower than both of those guys, and Hanzal was a massive over-pay by Minnesota.
Also no way Grabner get's a 1st either, or a 2nd for that matter. 3rd rounder is probably accurate. Honestly the Zuccarello deal is an over-pay as well. The McDonagh one isn't bad, but take out one of the prospects.

Get off your high horse, Karlsson is worth way more than McAvoy. Karlsson is a top 5 NHL player right now. It's questionable if McAvoy even has the potential to be a top 5 defensman in the NHL, let alone player. Sure, McAvoy has the potential to be a #1 defensman for a team, but even if he reaches that ceiling he'll be lucky to crack the top 10 defensman in the league. That is a best case scenario for McAvoy. This isn't a slight against McAvoy, it's just a testament to how good Karlsson really is.
You can argue that it's not in Boston's best interest to go after Karlsson, and frankly I agree, but don't try and tell me McAvoy is worth more than Karlsson.
