Caroline HAS to make the playoffs

Created by: Doug7004
Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 9, 2018
Published: Feb. 9, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Widely reported that Carolina is going to do everything they can to insure making the playoffs. Give up some youth from a position of strength, to bring in veterans that can help immediately. Good spot for JVR, so realistic shot to resign. Leafs give up a little of the now for a couple of promising prospects.

Overpay on Carolina's part in my mind. Gardiner doesn't do much for Carolina considering their strength is on defense. I'd argue that Pesce is even more valuable than Gardiner. Leivo and Rychel don't really add much value. So you're basically asking Carolina to downgrade or make a lateral move at best on defense, take on an extra contract, give you 2 of their top prospects, and give up their best face-off guy for 20 games of Bozak and JVR + a late 1st. I wouldn't do it if I was Carolina.

Yeah, I guess they could wait, do nothing, not make the playoffs, continue not to draw fans, nor get the new owner any playoff gates, keep the 2 prospects who are at least 2 years away, fire Francis and Peters, but get a late lottery pick!

Right, the smart thing to do would be to overpay for some marginal upgrades in hopes of *maybe* making it and then getting swept in the 1st round. And Bean isn't at least 2 years away btw, he almost made it out of camp this year.

Following your logic, Toronto should trade Dermott and Liljegren to Calgary for Stone. Liljegren is 2 years away at least and Stone might be an upgrade to Dermott presently. It's worth it because you'll be better right now, maybe Toronto might be able to get into the 2nd round after a trade like this.

that conditional pick makes no sense. at the 2018 draft you wont know whether or not JVR will resign, so if he doesnt then the 2018 2nd would have to be switched to a 2019 1st rounder, but the 2018 2nd round pick would have already been used at the 2018 draft.

I don't see a trade like that happening, but I could see JVR to them by himself, or maybe a pick or small bottom 6 forward they don't need. JVR for Necas, Bean and a first would be ideal, but I doubt Carolina gives up that much for a rental. Still, crazier things have happened.
