Description
Rangers need a true #1 Center.

Dallas gave up the 2nd most goal in the league last year.

Both McDonagh and Seguin will be in the final year of their contract if this trade were to be made next offseason. Adding Kevin Hayes (and potentially a player like Jimmy Vesey, depending on how ready Chytil is or if they want him on the wing) could greatly benefit. Dallas gets a great defender in the prime of his career as well as a 2nd/3rd line center. Rangers get a bonafide first line Center and that elite player that they are truly lacking. Brady Skjei looks like he's bound to be a top pair D-man and he allows McDonagh to be expendable.

If Im Dallas, i'd rather keep Seguin. McDonagh is a solid player but he's not in the elite group like Karlsson, Burns, etc Seguin is among the top of the top of his group and is younger than McDonagh. The addition of Hayes is nice but not enough if I was Jim Nill.

What else would need to be added in order to make this work? Guarantee a 1st round pick? Jimmy Vesey? IMO Kreider, Miller, Buchnevich, Zibanejad are untouchable forwards especially if giving up Hayes

Its not a matter of what else is needed. Its that Dallas wouldn't want to move Seguin at all for just about anything (Barring a silly over payment of course) This is just my opinion of course. but just for fun if they had to trade him to NYR, I think it would look more like this:

Seguin

for

Zibanejad - A less good but still good replacement for Seguin.
Skjei - A big upgrade in a position of need for Dallas.
1st 2018 - Extra insurance in case Skjei doesn't ever become more then a top 4 and if Zibanejad never becomes more then a 50 pt guy.

I like the idea as a Rangers fan and I understand where F50 is at. I think a split the difference approach would work something like Hayes and Skjei if I was to make the deal now but if Hayes has a good year and he gets to 70 pts then I don't think we need the deal at all.

Good trade. It's good value, but I think Dallas would consider Seguin untouchable, unless they freefall in his last year...
