TML 2021 - Goalie Trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ajp_18</b></div><div>That’s exactly it, it would have to be the perfect trade for us to move a goalie and I’m guessing a trade that includes a with Korpisalo, Savard(with an extension) Anderson and our 2020 1st would get Nylander. So you’re not getting worst players but players who fill your teams needs.</div></div>
I'll be throwing jerseys on the ice if the Leafs trade Nylander for that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>Don't really see how that's relevant here, you are offering one that is a UFA next year for on that exempt for a pay difference of 2M. Then you add in Kerfoot, a 3C they don't need that cost 2.6M this year. So basically they are spending an extra 600k to be in a worse situation</div></div>
How is it not relevant?? If there was 4 years left after the expansion draft, would that not increase the value. The premise of the trade is that one extra year of a decent starting goalie isn't worth much more than a player like Kerfoot. Could definitely see CBJ saying that a player of Kerfoot's quality isn't all that valuable given their current forward group though..

Right, but only really bad GMs give up players of Nylander's quality for a package of worse players. Definitely not a bad position for the Jackets if they go into next season with their current goalie situation so understand if they only give one up in the perfect deal. Don't think it's happening though.

LOL either goalie with two years left to be UFA is not getting a player anywhere near Nylander's quality. I would probably swap Korpisalo for Merzlikins if that's fairer, but we're talking about two relatively unproved goalies here.

I'm assuming that CBJ cares more about salary than cap hit but didn't realize Merzlikins was draft exempt. Apparently they're looking to trade one of their goalies though.

Larsson isn't the most exciting guy, but I would disagree that he's either bad or expensive, at least compared to the guys you've listed above. All depends on what the UFA market for defenseman is like though I guess. In the past it hasn't been a great place to find good players on budget friendly deals. Maybe this year is different though given the unique circumstances.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>newballcoach</b></div><div>Then why would you trade away Dermott? You made a weak position group weaker. He's at the very least better than Marincin. You also didn't promote Lehtonen from the AHL who is probably good enough for the 7th D at the very least. Then if you sign a UFA (even if they're not perfect) from the Demelo, Hamonic, Gudas, Braun, Dillon class, it won't cost a ton and could provide a ton of value. You make the group weaker by creating more competition and options. A big problem last year was the starters weren't great and there was no depth. You have the same problem this time, I doubt Dubas lets that happen.</div></div>
On Dermott, because cap plus you can trade Dermott for useful assets which isn't the case with Marincin. All of the claims you're making require additional moves to clear cap space. Could happen but you're making the team weaker somewhere else in the process. There's not a ton of depth in that forward group as is.
Lehtonen could be in the mix but we really have no idea what we have there until we seem him in NHL action.

Hard to see teams lining up to give significant assets up to acquire Johnsson and Kerfoot after the Leafs sign Pietrangelo and desperately need to unload players to clear space. Also, need more than 20 players anytime they're on the road.

Definitely hope this isn't the blueline they go into the season with, but barring a significant trade it's hard to see it being much better. Pietrangelo is a pipe dream and anybody better than Larsson is going to cost significantly more in cap space and/or assets.

Depends on what they do with their surplus forwards. If they can flip somebody for some valuable assets then I'm good with it. Definitely an overpay but that won't be an issue until the final year of the deal. Wish they didn't give him a full NMC in that last year.

Fabbro was mid-1st round pick a year ago and hasn't done anything to prove he isn't worthy of the pick. I think the Leafs prefer a player a little further along than a 1st pick a year from now.

Why is this a click bait?
I like this team but I think you would have to give up something more to get Brown, nothing significant but maybe a mid pick? The same with the Vegas deal, I don't think you'd get anything back, maybe give them a 3rd instead?</div></div>
Babcock loves Brown and is exempt from the expansion draft. Why would the Leafs trade an exempt forward (who is only 23 and just scored 20 goals...), plus the defenseman they are likely to expose, for a defensemen that they would expose? The leafs already have to protect Rielly, Gardiner, and Carrick (most likely), they will not take on your player you can't protect for a good forward and a "mid pick".</div></div>
Assumption is that they would go with the 4-4-1 protection scheme if Brown is out of the mix. I love Brown as much as anybody but the Leafs are going to have to give up somebody to get a defenseman and they're going into next season with Nylander/Marner/Kapanen/Brown/Soshnikov at RW. I think Pysyk is incredibly under-rated and would be a solid 4/5 defenseman for the Leafs long-term.

Is it just me, or does the Rychel acquisition not make Leivo expendable? They're two very similar players with not many open slots unless they can unload some contracts. Plus Leivo will have to go through waivers to be sent down to the Marlies. Maybe the Blackhawks would have some interest?

Lucic was traded at the draft for Miller, Martin Jones, and the 13th pick, and he had one year left on his contract. I would expect a similar return for JVR. I don't see the Bruins dealing a defenseman either way.

Young Defensive Depth
The issue with the Leafs young D isn't "depth" per se, as much as they have a lot of guys who project to be bottom pairing and nobody besides Rielly that can you reasonably project to be a top pairing guy. Also, they're very thin on the right side. One way to deal with that is to just load up with as many players as possible which increases the probability that one of them surprises you.
I like the idea of getting Pokka but I don't think a deal is there to be made. The Hawks are pretty thin in their D prospect pool beyond Pokka and there is no way the Leafs are retaining on JVR to get Pokka and a late 1st. I'm thinking more and more that the Leafs should keep JVR but if they are to deal him I think a deal with Minnesota(Dumba?) or Anaheim would make more sense as those teams are really deep defensively.

I don't see why the Leafs would do this when they can either keep JVR for the next two years to support their young centres, or trade him for assets that will help in the future.

I'm disappointed in you palhal. You missed the fact that Hartnell has an NMC and isn't likely to waive to go to Arizona.
Also, I don't see Edmonton taking that deal for RNH. They really need a RHD and should get better than Jack Johnson anyway. Throw in the fact that Clarkson can't just be thrown on LTIR and that you're 2 players short of a full roster and you're back in cap jail. Tougher decisions ahead for CBJ.
