The expansion draft is definitely an issue. But that's different from it being an overpay. Compare it to similar trades and it's pretty reasonable value. Biggest question is what would the Leafs have to give up to keep Seattle from picking him.

Rakell to Toronto
I think the Leafs take this, assuming that they can keep Hyman, sign a goalie, protect Rakell from expansion draft, and get under cap. None of which is easy. I'd probably take out Engvall though, Leafs need him for expansion draft. Is Rakell comfortable on the left wing? Top 6 LW is what the Leafs need IMO.

Rakell is not the option
Is Rakell better or worse than Blake Coleman? With retained salary their contracts become nearly identical and Coleman fetched the Devils a 1st and Nolan Foote so I would think a similar trade would be fair, no?
At the very least, I don't think the idea of the Leafs trading for Rakell in a deal involving a 1st round pick warrants posting a new team to make the point that it's a crazy idea lol.

Good luck finding a team that's both picking in the top 10 and looking to load up in the short-term. That's more of Sharks/Sens kind of move, so it's probably not happening lol.

Yeah maybe but then at what cost? The Leafs can't make a trade like this without a contract for Hertl in place (which rules out a deal this year), and the only contract Hertl is signing is going to be around market value.

I really like Hertl but as others have mentioned the extra two years on Nylander's contract makes this a hard no. Unfortunately there's not much the Sharks could add that would even it up. I doubt they would be willing to part with this year's 1st round pick.

how will they do it
I just don't really understand why we would trade prospects for Bertuzzi and then sign him to a market value deal when we just traded a very similar (yet more cost-effective) player in Kapanen for those same prospects.
Also, Brooks isn't an NHL caliber player and Hyman will command closer to $5m per season.

my deadline
Seems like reasonable value for Pearson. I'd prefer to keep Engvall to expose him in the expansion draft (he meets eligibility requirements) but that can be solved in other ways.
Bigger question though is whether or not Leafs will have accrued cap space at deadline. With all of the LTIR use I don't think they've actually been accruing much. But I guess they could always just bump Vesey to the taxi squad.

Hope of re-signing? With what cap space? Anybody they get at the deadline is a one shot deal. The Leafs are only going to have increasing less room to maneuver over the next few years so why not take a shot this year while the North Division is still a thing? Dubas has done a good enough of job re-stocking the prospect pool to use this year's first (high 20s) to take a run.

Also they'd very much risk losing the guy to Seattle themselves.
That being said, the value absolutely is better for the Ducks.</div></div>
Yeah you could probably argue that the pick should be going the opposite direction, but I figure even if Kerfoot is picked by Seattle, Anaheim is saving it's next best option. If Seattle doesn't take him I think there's value to Anaheim in just having another top 9 forward who can play centre or wing. Who knows if Getzlaf sticks around next season too.

But if TOR wants Forsberg at 50% retention, it starts with Robertson.</div></div>
Because NSH needs forwards, or you think Robertson is better than Sandin? Opinions seem to be pretty split as to who the better prospect is.
Big question for the Leafs is whether or not they'll be able to re-sign Rielly after next season, and if that means they'll need to replace him internally. If they can't re-sign Rielly it might make more sense to deal Robertson than Sandin, although both make me uncomfortable. But that's probably a given in any reasonable trade for Forsberg.

They only have Kerfoot and Engvall to fill that criteria, assuming they'll protect Matthews, Nylander, Marner and Tavares.
They can't include Kerfoot in a deal for a rental.</div></div>
Damn you're right. Unless Adam Brooks finds his way into 26 more games lol. Can't see it happening.

With the tightened schedule...and rolling the top-six 18 minutes a night...that could change</div></div>
Kerfoot would have to be in the deal for cap reasons, unless the Leafs could find somebody else to take him. I would think anybody besides Sandin, Robertson, and Amirov would be available in lieu of the 1st round pick.

Ohhhh, forgot about that lol. Would a new management team still hold a grudge over that? Maybe, but maybe not. Kerfoot is a better winger than centre so you can play him on the wing when Palmieri and Gusev inevitably jump ship. For the short-term the Devils should be looking for any NHL talent they can get while they wait for all of their prospects to develop, no?

Good point. But if that's the case, why not package Kerfoot with picks and prospects to upgrade the roster now? Maybe you find a way to trade for a better centre instead of a winger? But it's hard to see a path to making this team better that doesn't involve trading Kerfoot.

Hyman is one of the three I consider top 6 wingers (Marner, Nylander, Hyman). The main rationale for trading Kerfoot is to free up space to sign Hyman in the offseason. He would be a huge loss IMO, and they aren't signing him with Kerfoot and his $3.5m on the books.
Kerfoot's defensive abilities are drastically over-rated too. They certainly don't justify his salary. I like Kerfoot just not at that price, and the reality for the Leafs is that price is everything for their bottom 6.

Trade for Palmieri
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Palmeiri isn't an upgrade that much at wing. And exchanging Thornton at centre for Kerfoot is a downgrade. So what if Kerfoot is a cap causality, giving away draft picks unnecessarily isn't wise.</div></div>
Palmieri is a clear and significant upgrade by pretty much any measure. Agree that the big question mark is how Thornton (or whoever you want to put there) would manage at 3C, but Kerfoot has been pretty ordinary. It's also hard to imagine a significant move at the deadline that doesn't involve moving Kerfoot to make cap space. Regardless of it's Palmieri as the trade target, the Leafs would be foolish not to make a push at the deadline. The cap crunch is only going to get worse with Hyman, Andersen, and Rielly all coming up for contracts soon, and Tavares isn't getting any younger.

Bottom players are already close to league minimum so trading them doesn't save space after they've been replaced. Could trade Kerfoot and Johnsson instead but the return wouldn't be much, and you still have to find guys that can replace them for cheap.
