TOR shouldn't trade away any center. Unless they're getting an upgrade of course

Palmeiri isn't an upgrade that much at wing. And exchanging Thornton at centre for Kerfoot is a downgrade. So what if Kerfoot is a cap causality, giving away draft picks unnecessarily isn't wise.

Palmieri is a clear and significant upgrade by pretty much any measure. Agree that the big question mark is how Thornton (or whoever you want to put there) would manage at 3C, but Kerfoot has been pretty ordinary. It's also hard to imagine a significant move at the deadline that doesn't involve moving Kerfoot to make cap space. Regardless of it's Palmieri as the trade target, the Leafs would be foolish not to make a push at the deadline. The cap crunch is only going to get worse with Hyman, Andersen, and Rielly all coming up for contracts soon, and Tavares isn't getting any younger.

LOL they might not need more but they definitely could use better. They only have 3 wingers that have any business in a top 6.

Think you're underrating Hyman. And we haven't really seen if Robertson is ready due to his injury.

Kerfoot's their only semi two way center. Think they should keep him.

Hyman is one of the three I consider top 6 wingers (Marner, Nylander, Hyman). The main rationale for trading Kerfoot is to free up space to sign Hyman in the offseason. He would be a huge loss IMO, and they aren't signing him with Kerfoot and his $3.5m on the books.

Kerfoot's defensive abilities are drastically over-rated too. They certainly don't justify his salary. I like Kerfoot just not at that price, and the reality for the Leafs is that price is everything for their bottom 6.

No real need to worry about Kerfoot's contract.

He's going to Seattle.

Good point. But if that's the case, why not package Kerfoot with picks and prospects to upgrade the roster now? Maybe you find a way to trade for a better centre instead of a winger? But it's hard to see a path to making this team better that doesn't involve trading Kerfoot.

I don't think NJD would want Kerfoot anyway, so what would be the best prospect Leafs could offer?

With the tightened schedule...and rolling the top-six 18 minutes a night...that could change

Kerfoot would have to be in the deal for cap reasons, unless the Leafs could find somebody else to take him. I would think anybody besides Sandin, Robertson, and Amirov would be available in lieu of the 1st round pick.

Because Toronto would have to fill the exposure requirement rule for the expansion draft (two forwards, one D and one goalie that are both under contract for 2021-22 season and have played 27 games this year or 54 games the past two years combined).

They only have Kerfoot and Engvall to fill that criteria, assuming they'll protect Matthews, Nylander, Marner and Tavares.

They can't include Kerfoot in a deal for a rental.

Damn you're right. Unless Adam Brooks finds his way into 26 more games lol. Can't see it happening.

There is no logic to think that Kerfoot hinders the Leaf signings next year. Good chance he is a Seattle selection. If nothing else, he can be traded very cheaply the Johnsson was last summer. Either way, the Leafs need Kerfoot at centre now. Palermeri or any winger, not so much. But really the trade proposed is big overpay. Think the Leafs only have 3 top six wingers? How does 3 assists in 8 games Palermeri help.
