Long Term Outlook with UFA signings through 2025
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Diaspora</b></div><div>I disagree. After eleven consecutive years of suck, Buffalo fans have forgotten that competitive teams manage cap differently from tank jobs and rebuilders.
Good players won't sign unless you meet the market on salary and term. If you're limited to two years, you're only going to be able to sign marginal players (think Cody Eakin), not difference-makers.
Structure Campbell's contract so it's easy to buy out if you're looking for flexibility. Or trade him with retention if one of the young goalies pushes him out. Honestly, any term under five years is manageable unless he completely falls apart in year one or two. That's a calculated risk. Four years would be preferable.
Now $6.5 AAV? Seems a bit rich. You might get him at 4x6M or 5x5.5M. Unless he's a top ten goalie, trade him after year two for whatever you can get.</div></div>
Agreed. That G2 spot leaves plenty of room for competition and were not likely to see Portillo or Levi for at least a year or two anyways. our young blueline and forwards needs some solid goaltending they can rely on to truly flourish and test their offensive skills.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BuFfaLOFaN</b></div><div>Campbell that long is a bad idea, blocks both Levi and Portillo. I don't like signing a goalie past 2 years. Cozens is probably the best center the sabres have for the future. Think he's our PPG two-way 1C with Thompson being a decent 2. That top 4 defense is siick 2bh.</div></div>
Skinner, Cozens, Quinn and Olofsson, Thompson, Tuck could work as well. we will see what the kids do over the next season or two. The main point being that they are not going anywhere as long as Adams doesn't turn stupid and start splashing money on trades. I just don't see that happening in Buffalo.
And that blueline could be around for the next decade plus destroying other teams offenses if they are carful enough.

Ideal Offseason - BLACKHAWKS
The Buffalo trade is the complete opposite of what the Sabres should and will do. They have great cap control and an incredible pool of prospects that need to be the focus of the teams future. Giving those away for a big number older rental is a very bad idea and does not help the team at all.

Might be enough for them to finally send their broadcast crew to away games.</div></div>
Remember that the broadcast crew is likely to be very different this year without RJ.

I don't see any point in buying out Bjork with the cap space they have now. They will need that cap space next year and the following to sign the dozen RFAs that will be needing raises in coming seasons. Might as well just pay him now and get it over with.

Draft Day Trade
I know. Teams don't trade top five picks... This was based on a discussion from a Flyers podcast so I'm going with it. Philadelphia needs a future center just as much as a RHD but they have no second round pick. Moving down four spots still get them a good center prospect and with the 28th OA, they can also add to the defensive end. The Flyers need prospects and even Jiricek won't help them out of the gate. Buffalo has plenty of time to let someone like Jiricek develop and adding a top RHD is by far their biggest need outside of the net.

Mitts Kakko Trade with two Kids Lines
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Arh613</b></div><div>I personally love the idea of acquiring Kakko! That said I'm assuming the Rangers would decline this deal, because if they are to move him I think that they will seek a star (not saying they'll get one, but I think they'd be looking for a Schieffle type of guy for instance) But I'm not an insider so nor am I Chris Drury so I really don't know that for sure. Another note about Kakko though in my opinion if your are acquiring him via trade I think that the cap hit is far too high, I'd like to get him in on a bridge deal of like 2x2.5-3 AAV range</div></div>
The Saber's could easily extend Kakko an offer sheet for $4.5MM or more and give up less to the Rangers but we all know how well those work out between teams who see each other on the regular each season. New York, should actually be happy with this as it helps them on the cap front. Of course, they will never see it that was as fans never do see reason and always think unsigned RFAs are worth everything. The kid is disgruntled and has no good reason to make it easy on the Rangers GM.

Kakko Offer Sheet

It’s more likely that we’re still gonna have to overpay to get guys here until we start winning
And if NYR wouldn’t include Kakko in an Eichel trade,
then why the heck would they let him go for a 2nd???
I highly doubt they would</div></div>
Its called Cap Space. They will not have the room needed to answer a $4MM offer sheet if they want to keep Strome, Copp, and nine other free agents they need to get signed. The Rangers scratched the kid in the most important game of the season showing a lack of confidence. They are not going to give up that much cap space to someone they have lost faith in when they have so many other players on the line as UFAs.

I was good with Kakko being a key piece in a trade for Eichal six months ago, so why not give him a chance on a lower pressure team for a second round pick through an offer sheet. He would fit right in with all the other young question marks in Buffalo. The Sabres love the Swedish and Finish players.

What todays move indicates
Damn, that's a good looking team for a bunch of noobs. I love the slow bake as some have called it. Adams is building something that should be very special in a year or two and will be around for a good long while with the positive cap management. No point in spending big beyond the RHD and G1 needs. But I would still like to see Peterka and Quinn on a line together regardless of the defensive issues on other lines and inexperience. Those two have worked together so well in Rochester and should be given the chance to see if that can translate to the NHL. If the Donny Meatballs keeps the same "play a game that's fun" mentality in the locker room, Dahlin, Powers and the rest should make up for those defensive shortcomings.

Agreed. with the PK contract. And while I don't love the second line, Krebs would be far better on the wing with Mittelstadt at Center. I'm not loving the progress Mitts is showing over the past year. I think Cozens will be better poised for that C2 slot. I also think Girgensons is near the end of his life in Buffalo. The Sabers would be better running Thompson, Cozens, Krebs down the middle with Mittelstadt on the fourth line or even scratched depending on who we get at 9OA. I could see Lekkerimki getting a shot part way into the season if he's got at 9th after a time in Rochester.

Your sitting Krebs and Quinn when both have earned a spot on the team next year and are showing far better potential than the players you have in their spots? That's logical, I guess... Go ahead and spend away the cap space your gonna need to resign Dahlin, Powers, Cozens, Thompson and the rest of the UFAs over the next two years. That should work out great for a third rebuild in 2026.

Buffalo is not in the slightest bit interested. They already have most of the parts they need in this very young pool. They just need to wait and let it develop. Adding a big dollar rental for a year or two would set a disastrous example for the UFAs and prospects.

Not giving Mitts & a 1st for a modest upgrade
Not worth it
No thanks</div></div>
No way Buffalo gives up a first for RHD when they can find it in the draft without loosing Mitts. They are in no hurry and as was said in the quote above, trading value for a $1MM retainer is in no way a positive for Buffalo with trouble even getting to the cap floor next season.
