You're referring to a situation where a team trades someone and then tries to reacquire the player with retained salary. THAT can't happen for 1 calendar year!
NYR paid STL to retain for a rental. OTT signs Tarasenko in free agency as a UFA. OTT can retain and send him to NYR. There is no cap circumvention because he wasn't traded to OTT!! WTF is so hard about this?</div></div>
Because its not about the contract its about the player the contract belong to.....

It matters because PHI traded for him, signed him as an RFA and tried to trade him back with retention. That's obviously cap circumvention!</div></div>
So they can't reaquire him with retention, which is what I was saying before, same reason the Rangers can't trade for Tarasenko. Its all about him being on the roster, leaving and being traded back. Contract status UFA or RFA doesn't matter. The only thing that does is that he was on the rangers payroll during the season, he can't be reaquired with retention for a full year.

Get your facts right!
"The Flyers acquired the restricted free agent rights to DeAngelo, 27, from the Hurricanes on July 7, 2022, for three draft picks" literally from the link you posted!</div></div>
TBH, that doesn't really matter when the issue is about reaquiring him within a calendar year of trading him away.

Tarasenko signed with OTT as a UFA!</div></div>
Guess what TDA did with Philly. He signed there as a UFA. Before you say he was traded, his contract was expiring, which if you were correct the whole issue they had trading him the next summer wouldn't have happened. So yes, its the same thing.

Same exact situation. Trade was held up, Philly ended up buying him out two weeks later.

Literally quoting the CBA and what numerous insiders have said and what has been discussed on TSN, but I'm wrong.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SHOWTIME_TTV</b></div><div>THE CONTRACT ENDED! Tarasenko became a UFA then signed another contract! NYR can acquire him directly from OTT with retention if they want. The "one calendar year" doesn't apply!</div></div>
From the CBA
(4) Reacquire as part of a Retained Salary Transaction the SPC of a Player who was on that Club's Reserve List within the past calendar year;
Illustration: If Club A Trades the SPC of a Player to Club B (the "Initial Trade"), Club B cannot subsequently Trade an SPC of such Player back to Club A within one (1) calendar year from the date of the Initial Trade and retain a portion of the Averaged Amount of that SPC pursuant to a Retained Salary Transaction. However, Club B may Trade an SPC of the Player back to Club A within one (1) calendar year from the date of the Initial Trade if Club B does not retain any portion of such Player's SPC
The rule essentially means that a team cannot acquire a player with retained salary, if that player was on the team's reserve list at any point in the past calendar year (2023).
Whether the players is on the same contract or not, is irrelevant. The restriction is about re-acquiring the player, NOT re-acquiring the contract.

It would be against the rules if NYR traded Tarasenko to OTT. That never happened.
"If a team retains salary on a trade, they cannot reacquire that player for one year from the date of the transaction, unless the contract ends prior to one year. " The contract ended!</div></div>
Its not one year, its one calendar year. Meaning they can't reaquire him with retention until next season. The fact that his old contract ended is irrelevant.

A second and a prospect seems about right, but highly unlikely its to the Rangers.

Probably because it's not common knowledge. The wording in the CBA is so convoluted it's easy for people to get confused by it. But relating it to just Ranger fans is just ignorant.

Goodrow has a negative cap hit if hes bought out this season. The only "bad" year on his buyout would be 2026-27 where his cap hit would be 3.5, which is still less than what his cap hit is now.

Mesar would be the preferred target. Xhekaj does nothing for us.

Realistic cost
A realistic cost would be a massive overpayment. Rangers haven't given up on him and hes looked better the last two weeks than he has in a long time. Picks don't help the Rangers right now, hes playing top 6 mins, so they'd need a roster player back to fill that role and he would have to fit under the cap. Rangers have less than 90k in cap space last time I checked.
