Lou had a very Successful Retool
Relieved not to feel like the only person who’s happy with the shape of the team. Am also optimistic! This is a good lineup!

They played exactly zero games with a 100% healthy Barzal, Horvat, Engvall, Palmieri, and Wahlstrom in the lineup at the same time. Let's see how they look with all those guys playing together before we say the team is going nowhere.

sometimes you gotta zig (sign middle-6/middle-pair guys to 7 year deals) when the rest of the league zags (not doing that).
overall though, his summer isn't as bad as some others have had. he signed Sorokin to arguably an under-market extension; he got rid of Josh Bailey for a 2nd rounder 3 drafts away; and the only guys he overextended were at least guys that have shown they can be successful with this team (Mayfield, Engvall, Varlamov.) I'd rather Lou have that type of summer than what he did last summer, when all he did was trade #13OA for Alex Romanov and sign a ton of Bridgeport Islanders (the only UFAs he brought in that got NHL ice time were Hudson Fasching, Nikita Soshnikov, and Dennis Cholowski.)

You seriously couldn't find an ELC better than, checks notes, Matthew Knies??
You could have put Matthew Beniers in there for cheaper than Knies lol.

Ottawa lost on Debrincat explained

It wasn't the best trade but at least they still got assets for him</div></div>
Now this doesn't change the fact that he should've never traded for DeBrincat, but looking at it from a vacuum he did well.

Small market Canadian teams should really do their homework on American players before giving up hauls to acquire them. Chances are they / or their American girlfriends/wives don't wanna live long term in Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton or Winnipeg.

Kyle Palmieri was one of the Isles’ best forwards during their playoff push last year and was a key part of their best line, the Engvall-Nelson-Palmieri line. He’s better right now than Mantha would be even if he “rebounded”

Dude, Palms was a *beast* when he came back from missing a couple of months with concussions, and he was one of the Isles’ best forwards during their playoff series. If anyone’s washed, it’s Mantha, so this trade would be objectively terrible, but for the Islanders; not the Caps.

He wasn’t good in the playoffs, but I feel like the entire roster suffered from Barzal and Pelech playing injured.

Highly Doubtful
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BenIslandersFan</b></div><div>We must've been watching different hockey games last year. Mayfield is a high end 3rd pair defensman who kills penalties and he got paid to be that (he didnt have a great season last year, part of that is due to having a bad d partner). Dobson gets top PP minutes and is expected to be a top 4 dman-- he is nothing of that sort- he's a developmental 3rd pair dman who belongs on PP2 playing about 15 minutes a game</div></div>
Dobson had a 50 point season under Barry ****ing Trotz. He knows how to play, but Lane did his best to minimize the entire d cores effectiveness last season. Aho and Dobson weren’t great together because it limited the amount of time Dobson carried the puck. Romanov couldn’t play with Mayfield because neither player is a high end puck carrier.
It’s just not that complicated. Don’t blame the kids for being put in bad situations. Dobson and Romanov both benefited from new d partners in the playoffs. Meanwhile Aho was phenomenal with mayfield.

I don't think he's going to be a league min type of guy, but he's got next to no leverage in telling a team how much ice time he wants. He's gonna have to go out and earn it. In my opinion at least.
Or, head to a team in the bottom 1/3rd of the league, has a good chance at getting more minutes there. Potentially more money.

I never said that...although I don't blame you, that sentence is incomplete. It was meant to say if they can trade Nelson or Pageau for a defence equivalent, then maybe they don't resign Mayfield.
The last part refers to acquiring a scoring winger.

Yeah, I know he said that, but he’ll still need to fill Bailey’s old spot somehow. Also, running it back with Mayfield doesn’t solve any of our problems; we already have plenty of physicality.

I disagree since the Hawks are holding all the cards in terms of cap availability. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out for sure.

Marner To Utah
The whole problem with the Phoenix idea from the start was that there is no natural fanbase there. But there are legions of potential NHL fans/season ticket buyers in Portland and Milwaukee who would support their team just as fervently and numerously as Seattle fans. If the franchise moves to one of those cities, the new team won't need a marquee player to attract attendance.
Mormons don't drink beer or coffee, the two most popular beverages sold in NHL arenas, and have no historic indication of being interested in hockey. I don't see Salt Lake City as a potential landing spot for the Coyotes.
<a href="/users/BenIslandersFan" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@BenIslandersFan</a> is right -- two years of the expensive Mitch Marner for four seasons of Crouse and five -- FIVE! -- seasons of Keller is a terrible trade for {whoever these guys turn out to be}.

Severson would make sense at a slightly lower AAV if he doesn’t want to leave the tri-state area. He’s a far superior player than Mayfield is.

As much as I appreciate your willingness to mimic my language in the first sentence (And I’m being sincere about that), I would not trade Dobson based on the second half of this past season. A large portion of the issue has to do with Barzal’s injury and poor adjustments by a rookie Head Coach. Dobson will be fine.

Next season realistic
I would much rather have Kyle Palmieri's remaining 2x$5M than Max Domi at $4M (also I'd be shocked if Domi signs that cheap after a 55 point season this year). Sending Palmieri out for peanuts when his scoring is not that far off rom Domi's (Max is at a 22-38-60/82 GP pace this year while Palmieri is at a 25-26-51/82 pace) and his defense is actually solid (59th percentile in defensive GSVA vs. Domi's 2nd percentile).
I wouldn't even pay the 4th to dump Bailey - even if you swap Palmieri back in for Domi's contract, the team you've built here has enough cap space to absorb the $2.667M buyout penalty. The team has one of the league's worst farm systems, I think it's crazy to sacrifice anymore potential depth just to clear cap space that we don't really need at this time.
