<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Britishbulldog</b></div><div>For a 3rd line LW I would go for ARI McBain over Greenway.
I agree regarding the defense as well. The Leafs need another top dman. I don't care LHD or RHD. We can work around it, just get a top pairing dman. Move any forward or asset not named Matthews to make it happen.</div></div>
There is a big issue with that. Marner, JT, Bert, Rielly and Willie NMC can't be traded. Jarnkrok, Domi, McCabe, Brodie and Kampf have M-NTC contracts which limits the options where they can go. Including Matthews that's 11players who can't be traded or it's difficult too. Knies isn't being traded either. That leaves Robertson, Lilly, Benoit, Gio, Woll, Martin and Sammy available with no restrictions. Besides Woll and Lilly not a lot of value there.

What the off-season should have been
Maybe....I will say that while indidivually they dont look big, think that 21mil looks like this:
Bertuzzi 5.5
DOmi 3
Kampf 2.4
Reaves 1.3
Klingberg 4.1
Samsonov 3.5
WHile you cant argue that Samsonov had to be retained after 2023, going through the RFA arbitration process was not a good move simply based on the 1 year deal, and you could argue that Kampf isn;t overpaid by much, etc.... but only domi at 3mil for a likely 40pts on the 3rd line is looking like money well spent. And thats just 3 out of the 20 million spent, and yet we still have huge question marks in goal, defense, physicality and offensive depth (an annual issue).
Ultimately its kind of what weve seen before, but with the exception of domi, none of these guys look like keepers at those amounts. And even the younger guys like liljegren, robertson, timmins have not shown that theyre worth radical pay increases or are parts of the future.

Marner is the same thing. I would prefer Marner's skill and hockey IQ over both of the Tkachuk's everyday of the week but not at almost $11 MIL. The difference between Mitch and Brady (almost $3 MIL) is an elite 3rd line player depth-wise.
...and don't use the tax thing for the crazy Leaf player contracts...Brady pays the same taxes</div></div>

The leafs just dont need to do this deal, McMann fits well on our current 4th and if we need to really get out of a cap bind we will just waive reaves instead of giving up picks

Who says no
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Britishbulldog</b></div><div>I was kind of thinking that as well on 2 fronts: 1) The Blues cannot lose a Center as they don't have many 2) The Leafs have 2 3rd line centers with Domi and Kampf and although I like Kampf's game, hockey IQ, contract, etc MUCH more than Domi's I sense Kampf would be the easier one to move. Kampf is signed to a decent 4 year contract, plays the kind of hockey I remember the Blues demonstrating in the past AND the Blues have our low 2nd round pick.
Thinking Kampf, our 4th for our 2nd back.</div></div>
We don’t have cap space. And while we don’t have hardly any true centers. We do have Schenn, Hayes and Sundqvist who have been playing center.
I don’t dislike Kampf. But I’m not moving out salary unnecessarily and paying to bring him in with where we’re at.

They get wrecked because they don't have any good players. Chabot in Ottawa didn't get wrecked when he was a young guy in Ottawa. Rielly didn't get caved in all the time when he was young. Good players elevate everyone else. Ferraro doesn't elevate anyone. He's a secondary player. Best suited for the 3rd pair.

Leafs keep Timmins and Liljegren over one Ferraro.
Brodie won't be signed to more than one year
While maybe Cowan could be NHL ready as winger, doubtful, and absolutely no way is Minten NHL ready in October. Domi has played his best at centre. No thanks to Tanev at 4.5m

Ferraro is as overrated as Peeke these days. Guy gets wrecked every night. Below 30% in expected goals percentage. Liljegren has been above 50 every year. Liljegren is top 4 on a good team

To put it a way TML might get
Its the Kadri/Kessel effect.
You tried playing them above their ability and they were worse for it
You traded both and they won Cups
Savard Went from War % of 37 in TBL to 67% in MTL to 21% last year
So who's his line mate deffinately matters for him to produce at both ends
He needs 20 games to show which version of Savard he is this year, Dr Jekyll or Mr Hyde

Could this do it
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Britishbulldog</b></div><div>I almost see Jake M as a poor man's Jake M. For Jake M we paid LA Kings a low 1st Pick for that June 2019 (ended up being 22nd overall), an 22 year old AHL "prospect" LW and an overager OHL defense man.
Jake Muzzin was a 30 year old 6'3" 219 lbs LHD that hit a lot and had half decent offensive flair. He couldn't fight when things got rough though.
I could see Minnesota wanting a high 2nd (which we don't have) or a low 1st and an AHL/Major Junior (not star - Abruzzese? McMann? Steeves?) prospect for almost 28 year old (Jan 2, 1996) 6'3" 219 lbs LHD Middleton who, although he doesn't hit as much as Muzzin did, plays a rugged game and is developing his offensive instincts (31ga 5go 7a 12pts 46hits 69blocks). Unlike like Muzzin, Middleton can fight really well when the going gets rough.</div></div>
The thing about Middleton is you have to look at him not for the player he is, but what he is to the Wild. They absolutely can't trade him for things that don't actually improve their roster immediately. It would take a stupid overpayment to get them to say yes just because they actually need Middleton now. There's also no hurry to trade him because he's under contract next year too, so yeah.. what's the incentive to accept "fair" value on a player they need and have for another season? They could probably get a 2nd for him next year's TDL if he continues playing well enough.

You should probably wait for the Wild fans' input, but I don't see Minnesota giving you Jake Middleton for that package. The pick might not be in the top 80, Abruzzese hasn't proven that he's an NHLer yet and Lagesson is barely one.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Britishbulldog</b></div><div>I was wondering that as well...but in this scenario I could see McCabe taking Liljegren's role as they both can play the Right Side and both can skate and both make some mistakes with the puck.
That would add a playoff style LH dman to the Leafs with not as much upside as Liljegren and 3 years older than Liljegren... but I think better suited for the Leafs and where they are as a roster.</div></div>
I had a time where I really wanted Middleton but Minnesota is stacked on the right side so they don’t have a spot for Lily the only method would be to sell Lily for a first then use that to get Middleton

This is a correct statement, definitely needs to be the right addition though. Not the usual, "all our good prospects for 30+ year old #4 defenceman" that most seem to propose on this site.

Hanifin is worth the 1st and at least one of the 2nds alone. You are basically giving away Lindholm for free here.
Lindholm is also not a good fit for Arizona. They are close to being competitive again but they aren't contenders yet. Lindholm would be a far better fit for a more established team like Winnipeg, Boston, or Minnesota
