A deal that helps the Leafs and Coyotes
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CapFriendlysFinest</b></div><div>I understand the want for picks back for cap relief but this is more of a situation of getting better for both teams. Leafs don't need to move Engvall at all, Lilly is likely weeks away and makes a strong case to be a player the Leafs rely on for PK and possibly PP. He does not have a high cap hit for what he will likely produce making him a player of value, not a negative value. I hate this idea of every bad team HAS to get picks back for players. It is not true. Arizona is in a situation where Engvall immediately makes them better. This isnt a Ritche situation or a Marzek one where the Leafs are actively looking to move them because their bad. This is a situation that allows Arizona to get better at a cheap price for someone who likely plays on their top 6. If you were a rebuilding GM and someone said he would you like a young, speedy, large player who will likely play in your top 6 this season and onwards play in your top 9 for a 4th round pick, and you said no! I want picks back, the other GM just hangs up the phone.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Dan_the_Man</b></div><div>Does AZ want to get better this year or do they want to suck and be much better 2-3 years from now.</div></div>
I think where you're missing the point of my post, you're assuming Arizona wants to get better.
What Dan the Man said, Arizona doesn't want to get better, they are in a Bedard contest with Chicago and Montreal.
if anything, they want to get worse, and they want draft picks to help stock the system for the future as they are going full rebuild, not re-tooling.

Teams pay for cap relief, they don't usually get picks back.
Why would Arizona who's in a rebuild help the leafs, Engvall likely won't stick around there.
Engvall and 4th for future considerations would be more likely.

Absolutely, but I guess another way to look at it is, how many teams would love a 23 yo right handed D, with offensive upside on a 2 year $1.7M contract.
Most teams I would guess, so, more teams = bidding war = overpaying.

Durzi has a lot more offensive upside, Harris who's unproven and a 3rd won't be enough to get the deal done.
I'm thinking another decent prospect, or 2023 2nd and 3rd

I think that makes it worse, as a Carolina fan the OP shouldn't have blinders to the value of Chicago players.
Fans of a team usually overvalue their players and undervalue other teams... this is the opposite

The Johnson one is rough.
Toronto can't afford to bring Domi in, without shipping contracts out.
The Kane one makes sense, but I get the impression Chicago would want 1sts, but might be better trying to squeeze a prospect out rather than one of them, as those picks very well can be #28 upwards.

Before Season Starts
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WhoCares_ItsAFantasyGame</b></div><div>My biggest concern with Drouin is the logn factor. Teams may be hesitant to move on him knowing he has the potential to go out of the lineup at any given time. While yes he's a very good player, the value he has given that factor puts his value way down. Retention of his salary isn't an issue since it's for the current year only, plus if he does well and stays in the line-up they may even flip him again to a potential contender for another retention of salary making him a bargain at 1/4 price for any cup contender that may need a winger.
Habs can take the chance to keep him on board, and flip him themselves, but at some point his mental health in MTL is an issue, so why stress him out for the current year if you can move him now and get cap space. You never know if another team could potentially want to move a player at trade deadline and give back a few picks at the same time to get a bigger fish on their team.
As for Martinez I'm not overly concerned about cap compliance now, but more next year also. If they can move him now and get compliant, they can start looking to sign RFAs long term before their value explodes if they have a good year come summer time.
But yeah.. It was more of a "what if" move for him..</div></div>
I don't disagree with moving him now, but the point still remains, he has value beyond "future considerations"
His mental health will likely improve being out of the Montreal spotlight, so, I get the impression with his skillset, teams might be willing to take that chance of him being in or out of the lineup, ie, see my original 2nd or 3rd rd pick.
Vegas won't have to worry, cap is going up, Brossoit and Hill are off the books (with Lehner likely back next year, with Thompson), Patricks career is done, and Kessel is off the books, so, clearing $7.2M off the books, not having to re-sign any goalies, and maybe getting a bottom-6 forward or two, with the cap likely up $1-2M.
They'll be fine moving forward.

Drouin has actually looked good in the pre-season.
Why ship him away for nothing? salary retention should yield you something, a 2nd or a 3rd at the very least.
Vegas isn't moving Martinez, they're fine cap-wise once $14M of LTIR in Patrick, Weber, Lehner come off the books, then ship 2 forwards and 1 D to the minors. They're big issue is, they need a goalie unless relying on Thompson to be ready for a full NHL season.

Its gotta be Dach or Monahan
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonh514</b></div><div>Putting up 0.75 pts/game at any position has got to be his priority. If he plays Center this year and is below 0.5 pts/game the pressure will be enormous.</div></div>
While I agree, the fans and media can be detrimental.
Dach is 21, and on a 4 year $3.3M deal, if he puts up 41 points, given his previous high was 26 in 70gp, that's a win.
The purpose of St-louis' comment was, he wants to see players develop, grow, and reach their potential.
Dach scoring 65 points but being terrible defensively isn't a win long term for the team and just satisfies the people who read the boxscore and those who think +/- is a relevant stat to quote.

natural disaster
If by natural disaster you mean this whole ACGM, then you're spot on.
Toews doesn't sign at $6.75M, especially with the cap going up significantly thereafter.
LA doesn't trade Durzi for a 2nd pick, and even if they did, his progression by 24-25 makes him on pace for more than a $300k raise
and Bob, really? he'd be 36 years old at that point, and you really think he's an upgrade? and that's an overpayment for Bob, his full contract would cost a pick to move, with retention, lower the pick or add a player going back, not Girard and Georgiev.

Fabbri who's always injured, Veleno who's development curve is turning him into a 3rd-4th liner, Zadina who is on track for being a bust, then you top 15 protect the pick to a team who's rebuilding and needs high picks quickly.
That 1st rd pick is the only true value in that trade to a team that is gunning for a rebuild

To paraphrase St. Louis, "Wins don't always come on the scoresheet"
The development of Dach is important, especially as a center, I would personally like to see him with Drouin and Gallagher.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HockeyIsMyPassion61</b></div><div>Detroit passes 100% on trade #1.
If Alex Nedeljkovic has a bounce back season, He's worth at least a late 2nd round pick.
Oskar Sundqvist is worth at least a 3rd round pick.
Filip Zadina is worth a late 2nd round pick, Perhaps more if he has a tremendous season.
Plus 2 2nds on top of it. The only decent piece Detroit is getting is Owen Beck the rest can you keep.
Trade #2 is fine, But i'd still pass on it.</div></div>
Montreal agrees that trade #1 shouldn't happen, but for different reasons, those reasons being that all the players Detroit are giving up are busts.
Montreal would trade with the Isles directly for Dadonov if that is considered "reasonable"

I disagree wholeheartedly with your assessment that he wouldn't suffer on the 4th line.
Guy has play driving capability, burying him in a 4th line role will delay his development.
Better to get 1st line minutes in the AHL to grow against men, or go back to Junior and absolutely dominate to help build the ego a bit.
