Top possible value for Matthews

He played for 7 years and never showed up on a "must-win" game and never looked like a real top player in the playoffs. When are you writing your book on NHL athletes? Since you seem to be quite enlightened on this subject, with your insight on a player who's a top-10 player in the league during regular season, but can't perform in the playoffs somehow because of the market he plays in.

Matthews signed for 78 years Bedard wants to go elsewhere
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rhea</b></div><div>Not completely useless no and with a coach who had a clue it would be different too in my opinion. "With a coach who had a clue" "small guys who always slows".
He played for a coach who won the Olympics, the Stanley cup, and reached two other finals. He played with very, very talented linemates, yet he never delivered in the playoffs, looked completely invisible in all "must-win" game he played in, he's soft and doesn't seem to be a leader.
Sounds like you're just looking for excuses for his poor performance.
Matthews at 14/15M$ for long term? Pretty sure the return would be very underwhelming. Sure there's probably a team who'd pay more than a late first, after all h'e gonna sell jerseys and he's a high profile player, but there's no universe in which Leafs get a Connor Bedard type of return.

Seriously why would any team want to give valuable asset to acquire Matthews, a great regular season player but a complete useless player in the playoffs, at 14/15M for 8 years?

Matthews seems to want to be the highest paid player in the league, and Matthews at 15M$ a year is probably a negative asset for a team. I don't think they'd get a late 1st round for Matthews at 8*15M$

An objectively fair deal
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Camper27</b></div><div>Fair enough, but being a voice/sounding board of the Montreal fan base and there are enough of you that provide that message (chat lines such as here and direct messaging to the Habs), what is a fair offer/value or return to Wpg at the trade deadline? Now be fair!!!</div></div>
Well, realistically Montreal probably won't competitive next year so the idea of trading valuable assets (like 1st rnd picks / high prospects) at the deadline makes no sense for them. There's probably a team out there who would offer much more to get him as a rental for a playoffs plush.
For me the only way Mtl gets him is when he becomes UFA. That's why I don't see them offering more than a late first (FLA pick) + an okay player like Dvorak and a B prospect like Kidney. Then WPG probably says no and try to get more, but it makes no sense from MTL standpoint to give up more than that.

Top possible value for Matthews
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hitagi_Senpai</b></div><div>You're saying he wont preform. But take him OUT of Toronto, I am sure he'll be fine.</div></div>
He won't. He never did. He's never going to be a core player of a winning team. He has some value because he sells jersey and is a high profile player, but I most team are trying to win and make deep playoffs run. Nobody is giving much value for a guy who never showed up in the playoffs, seems to have 0 leadership, is soft, and is going to want to be the highest paid player in the league.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Camper27</b></div><div>Spoken like a true Montreal supporter... This why this storied franchise currently is sitting in the position that they are in. Honestly, you should start seeing the value that other teams have and value your prospects, players accordingly.. You guys are so of base that it isn't worth reading.</div></div>
Hmm my opinion has literally zero impact on the organization or the position they are sitting in.
But nobody is giving that much value for PLD, even if he was signed for 8 years at a decent price. At the moment is a RFA one year away from being a UFA, he seems to want to come play for Mtl (or at least get out of Winnipeg), and he'll be looking to get probably around 9M$.
He's absolutely not worth 2 1st round pick (especially with the 2024 probably being a top10 again) + the 37th pick this year, plus a young promising D, and a good prospect like Beck.
There's literally 0 chance that Montreal give that much for a player like PLD lol. He's very good, but he has massive flaws in his game.

His value is easily 2-3x what you've put. Even as a rental..</div></div>
Well your first sentence explain why he has little value to any other team.
Why would anyone want to pay more than that for a rental who can't perform in the playoffs. That's pretty much the point of trading for a rental.

Your value here is like barely worth a 1st line forward. We're talking about a franchise altering player...</div></div>
He's a top15 player in the league in regular season but he's a useless player in the playoffs. He proved that many times. He's soft and not willing to sacrifce anything to win, he's never gonna win.
I think the trade I built is the absolute best case scenario for the Leafs. Otherwise he's just going to walk away in one year.

I dont think any team would give more than that to get one year of Matthews at 11.6M$. He's a good player in seasok but he's completely useless in the playoffs.

Remove Beck, Barron, the 1st in 2024 and the 2nd in 2023 and maybe Montreal do that.

Matthews for Laine and 3rd overall pick
Matthews isn't worth the 3rd overall pick alone. He's UFA in one year, 11.6M$, and he can't perform in the playoffs. He's closer to being a cap dump than getting a top3 pick at this point.

I do have two daughters actually lol... But I'm smart enough to understand that sharing intimate picture without consent, while bad enough and very much condemnable, is not equal to rape and covering up rape.
You just casually saying you'd kill someone and spend your life in prison if someone did what Mailloux did to your daughter doesn't make you a good father or a good person lol, it just makes you a deranged maniac.
