As a Habs fan, this trade makes absolutely no sense.
Yes Huberdeau contract is terrible, but it's insane to think Calgary would retain salary + take 2 terrible contracts + give up an excellent 27 years old RD who plays 25 min a night.

COLAll-in vs MTLRebuilt win to win
? Deal?</div></div>
Tu dis legit n'importe quoi.

Zegras to MTL

Maybe not terrible but I don't see any reason for MTL to trade Guhle, who's already pretty good and looks like he can develop into a legit 1st pair D.
And if they were to do that, it would be for much more than a late 1st (Carolina is likely to get deep in the playoffs), Matt Dumba who isn't any good anymore, and a risky prospect like Daniil But.

Possibly but he's still a highly skilled forward that has 2 60pts+ seasons under his belt at 22 yrs old.
The cost to acquire him must be pretty high. I'd add a protection to the 1st rnd pick but other than that, if they can get him while offloading Anderson contract, and without touching the best players/prospects of the organization, I'd do it.

Is there conditions to the first round picks ? Top 5 or 10 protection ?</div></div>
I don't know but MTL got a 1st round pick to take one year of Monahan, who was still a decent player but had was considered fragile. I considered the price to take Campbell's contract to be much, much higher. Then add Allen who's a decent goalie. I think the value is right. Maybe add a top-10 protection to one of the pick, not both.

Top possible value for Matthews
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>That's overblown. Nobody will care about that. You could have made the same argument about Matthew Tkachuk last year when he was traded.
If he is available, he will garner a lot of interest, but the package the Leafs get will not be what people think they should get because of his contract status and NMC. That's basically it. The proposed package in this thread includes a top 10 talent, and multiple 1st round picks worth of value, with no cap having to go back to Toronto, which adds additional value for them. Yet, people react like it's some absurd package.
Matthews is very unlikely to get full value in a futures based package. Which we both agree on. It just doesn't work that way in the NHL.</div></div>
I don't think it is overblown and I don't see any comparison to Tkachuk. He was pretty good in last years playoffs and I don't really remember his past playoffs, but Tkachuk brings much more than just goals and points to a hockey game. He can influence the game in many ways.
Matthews has been underwhelming for the 7th season in a row on the playoffs. He still has decent career stats in the playoffs but he never showed up in a "must-win" game, he's way too soft, he doesn't seems to be a leader, and when it matters the most he can't be at his best.
Yes the contract situation might impact his value more, but his playoffs performance and his (apparent) lack of character in those games won't help TO get full value either.
Even if a team is confident they can sign him long term, do you really want this guy at 13/14/15M$ a year on your roster for 7/8 years? He has shown nothing in term of leadership/character that would entice teams to try and build a winning team around him.

Matthews signed for 78 years Bedard wants to go elsewhere
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rhea</b></div><div>Well he won't first of all, but to say he might not even get a late first is...well kind of nuts. I do get your point though, but strange stuff happens and this would be no different.
As a Leafs fan if he is not 100% committed, I would want the bald prick gone. I don't get attached to players.</div></div>
Well there was a rumor that his asking price is $15M, now that might not be true, or that might not be the contract he gets... All I wanted to say is that IF that's his cap hit (or around that amount), his value will be lowered significantly. There's no way he fetch a return like the pick for Bedard. I think a lot of teams would pass on giving up valuable asset for a guy like him at this price tag.
If he's signed at a more reasonnable amount than yes, the return would be much better, but again, it's not going to be Bedard.

Top possible value for Matthews
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>budgeteam</b></div><div>Considering Arizona's 2022 2nd is basically a late 1st, this isn't as crazy as it seems if Toronto views Geekie as a top 10 talent like Arizona almost certainly did when they moved up to take him at 11.
Pending UFAs never get full value. That's the reality of trading them. A top 10 talent, and two possible first round talents is a massive haul for a pending UFA who has a NMC. His NMC does not kick in until July 1st, but it still will shape the market for him because if he says he only wants to go to Arizona, or that he doesn't want to sign anywhere until testing the market next year, teams aren't going to shell out huge assets for him.
The Karlsson trade is probably the closest comparable out there in terms of this level of star getting traded as a UFA. Karlsson didn't have a NMC, although the clock was ticking for Ottawa to make a deal due to how acrimonious the situation was. At the time of the Karlsson trade, Norris was comparable to Lamoureux. Dorion has gone on record that he projected Norris as a 3rd line C who might top out as a middle 6 type guy. He wasn't expected to be a star. The 1st round pick was projected as a late 1st and wasn't even available to the Senators for an additional year. Then they got a 2nd. Balcers and Demelo had little or no value. Tierney was a solid young top 9 forward at the time.
The above package as it stands today is better than the Karlsson package as it stood when Karlsson was traded. There was a lot of fluff in the Karlsson package, but really it was four pieces that had any value Norris, Tierney, 1st, 2nd.</div></div>
That.
Plus the fact that he never performed like a top player in the playoffs. It would definitely lower his value as a rental.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Rhea</b></div><div>Sigh I am making no excuses man, nor do I ever. All I am saying is that if he is set up for success with linemates may are tougher and not afraid to be hit all the time, it might be different.
I don't think he will get 15 mill anyways and there would he players coming back to balance the cap. If you think the Leafs get less of a return (for at least a whole year of him) than teams get in deadline deals for much lesser players (for a few weeks) then I am not sure what to say. That is ridiculous. It happens every single year.
I guess we will just wait and see, but this is laughable.</div></div>
He'll get less of a return if he's signed to the highest paying contract in the league. Cap hit has an impact on a player's value on the trade market. It isn't new. And if he becomes the highest paid player in the league, his value would drop dramatically I think as he never performed like a top player in the playoffs.
