If Blues Trade for Stone
This likely doesn't get it done. Ottawa is going to want a 1st and top prospect for a guy who is a top 15 NHL player even as a rental. Think along the lines of what Panarin would cost and that should get you close to a real possibility for Stone.

They extended Rosen for 2 more years on a 1 way deal so I'm pretty sure they intend on having him play that 3rd pair LD spot. I'm not sure Tim will be ready for the NHL by next season.

Not really considering he was always going to be extended and I was seeing all of this before today and almost immediately after the Muzzin trade. They always planned on making sure they had no overages leak into next season thats why they've kept that massive buffer to cover the Horton contract and any performance bonuses.

That's almost the exact opposite. I keep hearing they're unlikely to do anymore unless they can move money out prior to.

Why are you signing Tyler Myers for $5M a year? This makes no sense when you're trying save wherever you can.

Ya the leafs are nearly 4.5M under the cap I don't think there'll be any carry over into next season, safe to assume you don't need to include any overages on next year's cap.

Not to mention that Marleau has played his best when he's been on Kadri's wing this season.

Marleau and Matthews just don't seem to click when they're together and Marleau for some reason always looks his best next to Kadri. All that to say I would I swap Johnsson and Marleau.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Hedman77</b></div><div>No he doesn’t.. Marner is not worth “much higher” than that</div></div>
Looks like someone already explained my point below. You aren't getting Marner to sign an offersheet on a fair offer, you'd have to considerably overpay to land him and that would put the compensation in the 4 1st round picks range. There's a reason the poster here picked that cap # and stopped at 5 years of term to keep it at that 2 1st a 2nd and 3rd spot and that won't get it done.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>corsiagainst</b></div><div>Toronto wouldn't have the cap space to offer sheet anyone, let alone Brazal. I could def see Lou doing this.</div></div>
How so? The money saved by not signing Marner plus a cap increase and then you have Marleau coming off the books and Muzzin. They could certainly offersheet Barzal and the reason everyone is afraid of offersheeting Leafs players is because they have more financial might than anyone in the NHL. They could payout 75% of the contract in the 1st 2 years and very few teams could keep up with that from a budgetary sense.

Good luck with that offersheet. You'll have to get much higher than that offer to A get Marner to sign it and B get the Leafs to not match it.

Matthews trade
That's a terrible terrible trade for Toronto. You have to offer up more than they would get if he signed an offer sheet (four 1st round picks) to even begin to consider it and even then Toronto would probably reject it because you're so very very unlikely to ever get someone of AM34's calibre in a draft pick. He's their franchise player, he's not going to be leaving Toronto and this silliness needs to stop.

Hey yeah I mean the Brown trade is possible and it's good enough value though they'd probably look for a 2nd for him.
Would love that Zaitsev trade to happen though I don't think Vancouver would go for that deal.

check buyouts outside of the regular period. It's still possible. ex. Troy Brouwer was bought out on Aug 2 last year.</div></div>
Special circumstance if an arbitration award puts them over the cap and that with Ottawa is about as unlikely as pigs flying.

For this to happen Marleau would have to be traded and bought out prior to the new league year so Ottawa would still be on the hook for 4.5M in real money and that's a no go for Ottawa.

What are you ready to give up to get rid of Zaitsev contract
Why would they re-sign Hainsey? Gardiner is a cap casualty and it's not generally a good idea to sign players long term when they're 29.
Calle Rosen is ready to step into a 3rd pair role and Dermott is more than capable of playing the top 4 so yes even without moving Zaitsev they can fit Matthews, Marner, Kap and Johnsson in under the cap the others aren't really much of a loss if they can't fit them (Lindholm, Oz, etc.). Worse comes to worst you can definitely move out Brown without any problems.

What happens if a team goes over the cap
Well I mean firstly the league wouldn't ratify the contracts to get you this far over the cap (you can only go 10% over in the offseason) and then there's some serious penalties. Forfeiture of games while clubs are over cap. Forfeiture or draft picks by club. Fines of up to $5M against the club, forfeiture of up to 25% of player salary by any player that was signed to make the club non cap compliant. And there's more. They've made it pretty difficult to even attempt this as an option.

An idea when it comes to Zaitsev and 2019-20
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jmac490</b></div><div>Why does everyone bash Zaitsev? He was dominant with Dermott and a lot of his flaws are exposed when playing with Gardiner. It's tough to do the job of two defenceman in the d zone. Gardiner can somewhat make up for those inconsistencies when he is producing points. Zaitsev may also get a lot of flak from the analytics community for having low CF etc. But this is likely due to more defensive zone starts and PK time where he plays with Hainsey, who has been showing some flaws and lack of speed as he ages.
Russell is downright horrible. The defense will be fine with
Rielly-Muzzin
Dermott-Zaitsev
No need for a buyout, Zaitsev may be slightly overpaid but he is vital in the roles he provides for the team.</div></div>
Zaitsev is a 3rd pairing D. He's paid much more than that. The Leafs need cap space for 2019-20 more than anything right now and if they made this trade and the subsequent buyout of Russell they gain a little over $3.5M in cap space in what is more than likely to be their tightest cap year in this Matthews era.

Let me be the 1st to say I freaking wish that the Minny and Carolina trades could happen lol I really really do but there's zero chance that either of those have a chance.
Gardiner is great (and better than Pesce) but he's up at the end of the year and Carolina doesn't need a D in return for a D. They need scoring talent.
The Spurgeon trade just no on that. Not a fair trade at all.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LeafsDieHard</b></div><div>Pesce and Severson are both comparable to; Hamonic in my opinion, who, when trade to Calgary (with a conditional 4th) was worth a 1st, 2nd and conditional 2nd, with almost the exact caphit (3.8mil), 3 years of term (those 2 Dmen have 5-6 years of term) and 3-4 years older than those 2.</div></div>
Yeah but you're trading a lot more value than a low 1st, 2nd and conditional 2nd for Pesce here. This is moot now though since they added Muzzin for a lot less than any of these trades.
