But rumour has it Staios has a repuation for being very cautious. Safe is death.... Ottawa is in big trouble moving into the future. But I was definitely wrong, even with a NTC.... You risk losing a nothing asset like a 4th and bet on a guy like Tarasenko who has changed his agent 3 times this season trying to find a guy to find him the money and term he wanted. If you're a GM and you couldn't see that? He was never going to stay in Ottawa, he would be exactly where he was last offseason. The last sort of big name to find a home. I don't think Tarasenko would risk that and that's exactly where he'd be if he hunkered down and said Panthers or leave me in Ottawa..... I think by Friday he goes anywhere Ottawa would be willing to send him. Staios just has no spine.....sad to say but it's true.</div></div>
Tarasenko wasn't Staois's signing, right? He might have felt it wasn't his blunder to hold strong on.
Ottawa will be interesting in the offseason. Just keep beating the Leafs lol.

I would put Henrique in the middle moving Nuge to LW.
I would also put Perry on the 4th line and Carrick in the middle, health scratching Ryan.
Gagner is in the minors.

He said so himself, and didn't close the door on coming back next season. Yes Ottawa accepts a 2nd rounder and a prospect but that is without having to retain cap. If Ottawa is eating salary it will cost more than a 2nd. The 2nd and prospect is ONLY if you;re taking him and 100% of his contract. If Ottawa is eating 50% that 2nd definitely becomes a 1st especially with that pick so close to the end of the 1st round.</div></div>
Mantha went for a 2nd and a 4th and doesn't have a NTC. Tanev with a huge market, got a 2nd and a prospect.
Highly unlikely Tarasenko nets a 1st on his own.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Riddick19</b></div><div>Yeah it's not really going to matter... Tarasenko isn't the main big fish in this deadline. There will be a couple of others that will have to go first and thoise will likely be the teams he wants to go to that likely will have no cap space. Tarasenko likely says just trade me to a place you think I can win in. There are as many as 5-7 teams really pushing in on him so they do likely land a 1st and a solid prospect.</div></div>
I doubt he gets more than a 2nd and a prospect: Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia notes that the Senators are seeking a second-round pick and a prospect in return for Tarasenko, who will have final say on a deal through his no-move clause.

I am either ALL IN or conservative, not a fan of the middle ground.
The thing is this would be minimal disruption to the team; sometimes even when a team adds great players, those players might throw the team off. This trade scenario would unlikely cause a big shakeup.
Also, Oilers might need to hold on to some assets to offload Campbell in the off season.

Tarasenko has a full NTC, this will limit the market. Tanev had a much bigger market and only returned a 2nd. Maybe add a B or C prospect but I don't see Tarasenko getting a 1st.

For the Oilers, I think that is a big over payment.
I think Tarasenko has 2nd round pick value.
If Oilers putting in that much value, I would rather a player with term.

I think Zegras is floundering because he is the guy on a bad team. Give him some shelter on the 2nd line where he's not the guy and he should blossom.

Guentzel to EDM
I am not at all a fan of the Oilers trading for Guentzel.
Look at the huge price people are proposing to pay. Even if he's that good, Oilers are very unlikely to re-sign him between his contract ask fitting under the cap AND Guentzel being American.
I might be in the minority but I hard pass on Oilers trading for Guentzel.

I feel like if the Oilers use whatever assets to perform a maybe marginal upgrade on Ceci and instead use it to add to the forward group, the Oilers would be a better team as a whole as compared with upgrading Ceci.

The Oilers defence group and as a team are playing great at the moment. If any of the players listed are marginally better, it still risks upsetting the chemistry.

IMO, none of the defencemen you listed are significant upgrades on Ceci. If Oilers are to investing assets, I would want a bonafide 1st pairing defenceman.

Granlund's stats aren't bad this season and he would be the dollar in dollar out for Campbell. Granlund contract ends the same year Draisaitl is UFA so contract length is ideal.

2024 Goalie Trade - Good for all teams
The way I see it, and the market can prove me wrong, is all three goalies have negative value with Campbell being the very worst, then Merzlikins and then Vanecek.
Columbus is not close to even a playoff team any time soon. Then dump their negative value goalie, taking an even worse negative value goalie but gaining a 2nd round pick and saving some cap hit/cash.
New Jersey get a goalie with the biggest rebound potential and a 3rd while dumping their below average goalie. It's a risk for New Jersey for sure but Merlikins seems at least motivated.
Oilers pay the most future and get out of the worst contract. They also take a risk that Vanecek can at least rebound to be an over priced backup.

Karlsson Sissons Bjugstad and Karlsson Retention
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ledge_And_Dairy</b></div><div>You still aren't getting it. It's about <strong>ACTUAL MONEY</strong>
Minnesota retained *1.875M of Ryan O'Reilly's contract for the remainder of the season. ROR had a signing bonus in the summer of 5M so he was only owed a total of 1M over the course of the entire season. He was traded with 56 days remaining in the 189 day season meaning he was only still owed 29.6% of that 1M. That means ROR was only owed 296k in actual money. Minnesota retained 25% of that so in other words they paid 74k for a 4th round pick.
Monahan was actually owed 6M still but did play games for Montreal this season, Insurance likely covers his missed time.
Marleau was only owed 1.25M in actual money when he was traded to Carolina to bought out. He never actually played a single game for the Hurricanes so this could be the best example of what it would how much money a 1st is worth in completely dead cap space. Based on your trade where Chicago would be paying 20.6 million in actual money to facilitate your trade then you are looking at 16.5 1st round picks in value needs to be paid to the Hawks</div></div>
Are you even reading my posts?
I EXACTLY quoted extra money. It's been said that San Jose won't retain more than 20% - I have San Jose retaining 20% which means the owner isn't paying Karlsson 80% of his salary.AND they are receiving three 1st round equivalents.
The Blackhawks aren't likely competing in the next four seasons and for retaining are traded four high draft picks. This will give much more assets in the future to compete when they are ready. The owner of the Blackhawks would need to choose to invest in the team or save money.
