Buffalo Sabres signed Mattias Samuelsson (7 Years / $4,285,714 AAV)
Might be one of the funniest threads ever. So many people who don't know anything about the player, but acting like they do. Using points for a defensive d man :tearsofjoy :tearsofjoy . It's always the same posters too acting like they know it all.

Great contract! Y'all who voted no clearly never seen him play or know who he is. 1st pair shutdown D-man, I don't see people calling Pelech's contract a bad one. Samuelsson will probably grow to be just as effective of a defender.

A great contract was the Batherson contract. Good cap hit before a guy broke out. This is the opposite. It's not a cheap deal. This is a contract you'd give a guy who already broke out. This deal makes him the 14th highest paid center in 2023-2024.

Buffalo Sabres signed Tage Thompson (7 Years / $7,142,857 AAV)
Man I was expecting this comment section to be like every other Buffalo thread and CapFriendly doesn't disappoint.
It's wild that Norris, Suzuki, and Thomas had more expensive contracts signed after one big year, and I can hardly find the same condescending comments on those signings. Tage signs for less money and term, and yet this is getting blasted by people who haven't watched a second of Sabres hockey in the last decade. It's a calculated risk, not the ghost of Chiarelli at the reins.
There are some key differences between those each of those three and Thompson, and yeah that's why Tage has gotten less, but as always context really doesn't matter here.

Tage was playing on the 4th line with Vladimir Sobotka before this year in Krueger's defensive system.
He's a much different player in Granato's high event system playing with actual talent. Only way he's reverting back to that is if we hire Krueger back as HC.

No offense man, you sound like someone who hasn't been paying attention to hockey since the cap.
His contract will be the 74th biggest hit starting next year. From now until next season, how many players sign extentions for a bigger cap hit? That will drop his hit even lower than 74th. Last year he finished 54th in scoring. So even if he dips, he will still be producing to the level of his contract.
38 goal scoring center. Yeah, a little over 7 million is nowhere near an overpayment in today's NHL.

Suzuki is better than Thompson defensivly and has a better track record. Suzuki put up two 40 point seasons prior to him earning the contract. Thompson had 3 poor years before his 1 breakout year. Thompson has a higher ceiling but the floor is significantly lower.</div></div>
Tage was much better offensively though. Had a .15 better PPG & a .23 better G/PG.
PPG
Suzuki
2020/21: .58
2021/22: .73
Tage
2020-2021: .37
2020-2021: .46 (under Granato in 2020-2021)
2021-2022: .87
Both got paid off a breakout year. Tage's breakout year was better than Suzuki's breakout year.

It's funny how people think this is bad, but so many thought Suzuki was a great contract.
7.8Mx8 for a 15 goal season is great
7.1Mx7 for a 38 goal season is an overpay

More important, this was a tale of two seasons, pre Tuch v post Tuck:
Skinner pre Tuch 30 games 9 goals, 8 assists, 17 pts; post Tuch 50 games 24 goals, 22 assists, 46 pts.
Thompson pre Tuch 27 games 10 goals, 8 assits, 18 pts; post Tuck 48 games 28 goals, 22 assists, 50 pts.
While Skinner and Thompson were off and running, projecting their early performance over 82 games to 25 and 30 goals respectively.
But post Tuch they are running at nearly a point a game with their goal production over 82 games projected at 40 and 48 goals respectively.
<strong>MY BIG BOLD PREDICTION FOR NEXT YEAR, WE WILL THINK $50,000,000 IS A BARGAIN</strong>

I actually don't mind this contract. It's insanely risky, but it could pay off even if Thompson's shooting percentage drops a little. Remember, the Draisaitl deal was seen as super risky at the time too, and it paid off. While Thompson is nowhere near as good as Drai, it still reminds me of that situation.
In short, this deal will look either really good or really bad by the time it's done.

Standard operating price for a guy coming off 38 goals. I don't like the contract, but it's not like they overpaid. Just risky since this past year was an outlier and he was still under contract this year.

I feel like this is going to be like the Draisaitl contract back in 2017. Everytime I watched the Sabres Tage stood out for me. It's not like he was playing with elite players either. He's a unicorn player. One of the best shots in the NHL.

Another good depth move by GMKA.</div></div>
Guessing he is either in the press box with Bjork sent to Rochester, or he provides them some vet presence in Rochester until the inevitable injury call ups happen. Really hope he's the 13th/14th forward and Bjork gets waived.

A lot of money for a one year deal, but who cares-the Ducks can easily afford it, and they can move him at the deadline to a contender (probably at 50% retained) for a big haul. Good signing.

I think it's only really a big W for Calgary if they trade both at the deadline.
Giving huge extensions to Huberdeau at 30 years old & Weegar at 29 would be rough.

Keep in mind, $9.5M in Florida is roughly $5,619,180 after tax (before escrow/agent fees/...).
The only other places where a $10M salary is worth more than $5,619,180 after tax are Dallas, Nashville, Seattle, Tampa, or Vegas.
In order to get the same take home in Calgary, he'd need a salary of $10,755,631. That's 13.21% higher.

Gave up an NHL level player for a 6th round pick that will likely never play a game in the NHL. 100% loss on the balance sheet of hockey if you ask me.</div></div>
Would have probably made more sense to trade his rights in the offseason. There was clearly no market for him at this point.
