Buffalo Sabres signed Zemgus Girgensons (1 Year / $2,500,000 AAV)
Y'all know nothing about Girgensons. He's key to our team, excellent leader on and off the ice. Works his butt off every shift. Very good defensively and occasionally chips in some offense. How people think a 1 year 2.5 mil contract to a consistent 4th line guy is a bad contract I dont know.

I don't think I would do it as a Hawks fan. Values probably close, I just personally think we'll be able to get a good player at 19.

Kinda surprised he signed. Seemed like the yearly going back to college signaled him heading to FA.

Haha! Where is that person that said "worst-kept secret is Johnson not signing in BUF"
This is huge for BUF. Defensive depth is gladly welcomed and he has the chance to climb up the depth chart to play with Power.
Most importantly, BUF is getting players that want to play in BUF and more and more players are wanting to play in BUF.
NHL watch out...might not be 2023-24. Might not be 2024-25. But 2025 and beyond. Scary good.
Getting him inked is so big. Way better than some 2nd round comp. pick.

Unreal signing! I had written him off as a cut-your-losses situation. He's such an amazing skater, transitional defenseman. Gonna be a stud that every team wishes they would have. He'll shore up the 3rd pair sooner than later and help our GA immensely with his smart way of playing

One of the hardest working players in the league, one of the greatest leaders in hockey, and someone who really embodies what we want a Sabre to look like. Fantastic signing, I hope he sticks around past this coming season in a executive role, he's a key guy to have in the franchise in any capacity

Awesome! This guy has really good offensive upside. It's a pity we haven't been able to see any of the young Russians in tournaments like the World Juniors because that gives a good idea of the talent level of their prospects. Signing Neuchev is a great sign that Adams is still committed to bringing over as many of our Russian prospects as he can. We will see how he adapts to NA next season, likely in the same vein as Kisakov meaning it'll be a long period of adjustment. The talent is there no doubt

This is a step in the right direction. <strong>We need another legit top 4 shutdown defender</strong> and team defence to clean up our own end and playoffs could actually be a realistic expectation in 2024. Could happen in 2023 but seems like a stretch this year. Fingers crossed 🤞</div></div>
Wild fan here. I assume Samuelsson is one of the "legit top 4 shutdown defender(s)" you are referring to. Is Power not a shutdown defender? I'm curious as to what BUF fans feel about Power, Dahlin, Jokiharju, Lyubushkin, & Stillman. Along with Ryan Johnson (who's killing it for my Minnesota Golden Gophers).
To me, BUF, OTT, & NJD are set to become the dominant dynasties of the 2020s.

(MIN/BUF) - Greenway for 2nd, 5th
Win-win deal, I think - Buffalo needs stronger defense all around, and gets a strong defensive forward. The cap hit isn't ideal but if there's any team that really doesn't care about a slightly overpaid deadline addition, it's Buffalo.
Minnesota gets a nice return for a player, Buffalo gets a very useful player. I'd call it fair deal, leaning Minnesota. Buffalo filled a need and paid a fair deadline price for it.

I wanna say cap space but...they don't need that lol. Also Bjork might want to play in the NHL and Chicago can give him a spot. GM has so consider the human aspect of it

I got the third round confused with the second round. So it's a 1 in 6 chance of becoming an NHL regular in round three. You are correct. Sorry for the confusion.

On the other hand, a 3rd round pick only have about a 25% - 30% chance of turning into a NHL regular and that usually takes 3 or more years to happen.

I think your numbers are off.
From the 2019 draft: 0 3rd round picks have played 82 games
2018: 1
2017: 2
2016: 3
2015: 4
2014: 8
2013: 10
2012: 14
2011: 11
You need to wait 9 years to get to 25%.

Don’t understand why you’d trade for a bottom pair defender.</div></div> Surely you jest?
Maybe you forgot these highlights (lowlights):
1) Letting Ullmark walk,
2) Letting McCabe walk,
3) Getting only a second for Hall, coupled with giving Hall an $8,000,000 contract,
4) Getting only a third for Montour,
5) Having to take Bjork and losing Lazar in the Hall trade,
6) Signing Eakin when Larsson would have signed for less (BTW Larsson had more pts last year than Eakin during his two years with the Sabres),
7) ETC.
This trade is really aweful, but pales in the comparison to the first four.
You are thinking of the Kevyn Adams AFTER Jason Karmanos joined the team.
Kevyn must have made this trade without speaking with Jason.

Incorrect on the going rate buddy. The cap will be going up by so much that this will look like a bargain for a 2d if he makes it. This deal is still very high risk high reward.

With 4m cap increase announced this deal is great. And the way he is playing...they where not signing him for less than 5 or 6 next year if they wanted 7 years.

Buffalo is going to sink or swim with their young core and Samuelsson is a part of that core. Given that Buffalo isn't a highly attractive destination for most top end UFA's and even trade targets if they have NTC's (Murray for example). In that aspect this was a smart signing by Adams to lock up the guy they see as Dahlins partner for the next 8 seasons. This also incentivizes Dahlin to extend next off-season knowing he now has his D partner and Coach both extended.
They are barely above the cap floor, and shouldn't be approaching the cap ceiling for at least a few years. If they do start approaching the cap ceiling it would be due to a whole bunch of young players breaking out, and that would be a hell of a good problem to have. If he continues at his level of play they expect it's a great deal, and if he falters to a 3rd pairing level Dman that extra 1.5 million isn't going to be the difference between keeping one of their top players or not.

This is a gamble they didnt need to take, their cap situation shouldve been fine for a few more years- but this is going to throw a wrench in to their future negotiations.</div></div>
"if he stays on the 3rd pairing" he's not even on the 3rd pairing lol.
