because in free agency you make the WORST deals.
You think the Caps are happy about paying Orpik who plays 17 minutes a night $5.5M on a cap hit? I don't think so.

PLEASE GIVE THE FULL STORY, SIX EVEN STRAIGHT GOALS AND FOUR SHORT HANDED GOALS. Be fair, breakdown all other players , not just Hyman.
Admitting 3.65m is too much. But somehow you Hyman seems to your whipping boy for not even getting 2m. Sorry to inform you that many 3rd line wingers get 3 m a year.
The more you write about Hyman and Brown and the Leafs RFA, it shows that you know nothing about the CBA and values of hockey players. And you think you're an expert on the Leafs? LOL</div></div>
I said 6 even strength goals. How many people score 4 or more shorthanded goals every year? Not many.
He has ONE YEAR in the league, that doesn't get him a 400% raise.
I'm more of an expert than many of the people here. Considering some of my personal clients in my business are the player agents, the players, and management.

That's an interesting trade with St Louis. They may want more, but you are giving them a good piece.

Overpaid Hyman for his 6 even strength goals and you only sign him for his last 2 years of control, either 1 year or buy out years, not take him straight to free agency. Overpaid Brown. He will never be a $6M winger so why are you jumping him to $3M right away. That's a lot for Brodin. Taking on Kulemin and Halak for no reason makes no sense.

Good trades, but no reason for the Kings to make that deal, total waste for them. Fehr is the one that the Leafs want taken int he expansion draft.
You overpaid for Brown, and you can't sign Hyman for 2 years because he will be UFA at the end, either do 1 year or buy out a year or 2 of free agency.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>orignalsix</b></div><div>To me that's way to much for the Leafs to offer Ellis who will be a UFA in two years. The Leafs have lots of cap space and could sign a short term vet and keep those pieces that you traded. Dermott looks like he could be in the NHL next year, and the 15th or whatever pick could be a player in three years. And JVR might be needed by the Leafs next year and if necessary might bring a nice return at TDL if the Leafs wanted.</div></div>
Ellis would be nice, but he isn't the guy they need.
And what you're offering is probably NOT ENOUGH for him.

I don't know what it will cost. They're not going to get an A level prospect for anyone on their team when they will most likely lose someone. Plus if you do this deal it still causes them expansion draft issues.

Here's the thing with Hyman, is that he is 2 years away from being UFA. Either you sign him 1 year or 4 years, no middle ground there.
Joe will need more money and with the knee all torn up I would worry.
You will need to give more to get Lindholm because you gave a guy who is UFA and will probably cost more than Lindholm.
Not bad though.

I'm not sure Sparks is the answer at backup, but at the same time it is a back up, so it's not a major issue.
Still not don't think Gudas is anything the Leafs need or want. If he is a Polak replacement then you pay a 3rd pair d-man too much.</div></div>
Take a look at his possession numbers, he is actually quite good. Not a bad **** suppressor either</div></div>
Still doesn't change the fact he has done this in under 20 minutes a night. Leafs need a 25 minute a night guy.

Brown that's a bit of a risk, I don't know if I want to go that far with him. Boyle is probably closer to $2.5M but that's fine, not completely out. Don't know why you don't want Curtis back as Freddy's backup, he was very good this year. Hunwick at $1M would be a steal, so no complaints. Leivo is not draft eligible that's called Eric Fehr, not sure why people can't get this.
I'm not sure if Gudas who has never played 20 minutes a night is your answer, but who knows. It isn't terrible, but it really isn't much of any improvement either.</div></div>
Well Curtis just plain sucks. I mean he has been one of the worst NHL goalies nearly every year he has played. Sure, this year he was more than serviceable. But thats an anomaly most likely as I have trouble believing that he suddenly got good as a 30-something.
I'm not crazy high on Gudas, but I know Babcock would love him. And with his skills of getting the best out of players I think he could turn him into something better than he is in Philly.
I had no idea about Leivo, you're right. He did not play enough games.</div></div>

There is no way Hyman and Brown accept less than this, in fact I wouldnt be surprised if they got more. Polak made 2.25 mil this year, played well, a modest 500000 increase for one year as a reward is not crazy. Added a piece to JVR for Brodin, imo you could swap in any b-c level prospect and pick, the basis of the deal would still be JVR for Brodin.</div></div>
They're both RFA's, they don't get a choice in contract negotiations. I'm surprised how little Leaf fans know about hockey thinking that one season means a career norm.
So Polak is going back up to $2.75M when he went from $2.75M to $2.25M and no one else was looking to sign him for longer, again, look at what happened. Polak is a 3rd pair d-man, not a first pair d-man. So for 4 years of Brodin you get 1 year of JVR, good trade for the Leafs, not fair for the Wild. Need a defensive prospect to go the other way.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>orignalsix</b></div><div>Dragongrave: Well you are paying for projections in the future, not what was done in the past. Yes that is somewhat subjective but that's the basis of value. Not saying you're incorrect on but to keep on harping what a guys has done in the past or the number of games he has played in the NHL....kinda meaningless. Look at all the money that is going to paid to the Russians that may be coming to the NHL, when they haven't had played game in the NHL. Again based on projections. Zaitsev has played exactly one full season in the NHL and is expected to get 4.5m. Hyman has played more NHL games than Zaitsev, and we don't think Zaitsev is going to take 1.5m, cause he "hasn't played enough NHL games."</div></div>
Ok, there is NOTHING to project Hyman to be anything more than a third line forward, and he is easily replaceable. Yes, but they are adults, older and played more at higher competition. Remember that the KHL is above the AHL.
Try to compare and apple to an apple, not a spaceship.
